Now that Metal Gear Solid Delta has launched on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S, Konami is still figuring out its next move. They could create another remake or develop something entirely new. However, series producer Noriaki Okamura hinted that remaking Metal Gear Solid 4 would be a significant challenge.
In an interview with Real Sound, Okamura explained that he and Konami are hoping to capitalize on the success of the Metal Gear Solid 3 remake, but they are still deciding what project to tackle next.
He suggested they could either revisit an old idea with a remake, or create something completely original. Konami has plenty of source material to work with, especially considering the legacy of Metal Gear Solid.
Okamura explained that with many of the original Metal Gear Solid team members no longer at Konami, they won’t simply reuse the same approach they took with Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater for future remakes. When asked specifically about remaking Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots, he didn’t rule it out, but cautioned that it would be challenging. The complex designs needed to achieve good performance on older hardware would be particularly difficult to update for modern systems, he said.
Despite being released only four years apart, Snake Eater and Guns of the Patriots are actually set 50 years apart in the Metal Gear timeline. If Konami decided to remake the series in story order, the next game they’d tackle would be Metal Gear Solid: Portable Ops from 2006, originally on the PSP. Though, personally, I’d be thrilled to see a remake or remaster of Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance!
