In 2026, Mewgenics was the first game to achieve a Metacritic score of 90 or higher. This unusual tactical roguelike is quickly gaining popularity and could be a strong contender for Game of the Year. Reaching a score of 90 on Metacritic is rare and usually signals a truly exceptional game.
Edmund McMillen, known for games like Super Meat Boy and The Binding of Isaac, and Tyler Glaiel (who previously worked with McMillen on The End Is Nigh) recently released Mewgenics on PC on February 10th. Critics are loving the game, giving it a 90 on Metacritic, and calling it incredibly addictive. Mewgenics uniquely combines elements of strategy, RPGs, management sims, and roguelikes, and players are impressed by its depth and how it continues to surprise them even after many hours of gameplay.
Mewgenics Is The Highest-Rated Game Of The Year So Far
With a remarkably high score on Metacritic, Mewgenics is the top-rated game of 2026. Several other games tied for second place with a score of 86, including Cult of the Lamb’s Woolhaven DLC, Perfect Tides: Station to Station, and Nioh 3. Cairn completes the top five, scoring an 85. To highlight how impressive Mewgenics’ score is, only six new games achieved a score of 90 or higher in 2025, and four of those were nominated for Game of the Year awards.
Although Mewgenics quickly became popular after its release, the game almost didn’t happen. Edmund McMillen first started working on it in 2011, initially calling it Mew-Genics in 2012. However, the project became overly complex and unfocused, leading to its cancellation in 2016. It was later resurrected in 2018 as Mewgenics, but still took another eight years to finish.
Edmund McMillen Delivers Another Addictive Roguelike
Even though the future of Mewgenics was once unclear, it’s not surprising that Edmund McMillen has created another successful game. Super Meat Boy and The Binding of Isaac, both popular in the early 2010s, helped kickstart the current wave of roguelike games, and Mewgenics might be even more complex. Many reviewers have found new and surprising things happening in the game, even after playing for over 100 hours.
Okay, so I’ve been playing Mewgenics, and it’s… something else. Usually, cats in games are just cute little extras, but this game puts them front and center, and honestly, they can get pretty weird – and sometimes a little much! You’re battling and breeding them, and they come in the strangest forms. I’m still early in the game, but I can already tell this is going to be one of the most memorable titles of the year. Seriously, after over 100 hours, it still manages to surprise me. That 90 on Metacritic? Totally deserved. Be warned though, this game might steal your life!
