When it comes to Super Bowl advertising, Meta Platforms really has something to see.
The leading tech company, famous for its social media sites, plans to showcase its Ray-Ban Meta Glasses during Super Bowl LIX. These glasses enable users to capture photos and videos, play music, and make calls. According to Meta, these glasses are powered by artificial intelligence (AI), respond to voice commands, have a built-in camera, and feature open-ear audio technology.
The firm didn’t provide details about when exactly their advertisement would be shown during Fox’s broadcast of the Super Bowl on February 9. In fact, Fox had almost exhausted its commercial slots by August due to high demand, and they’ve been asking for over $7 million for a half-minute ad spot.
The advertisement is helmed by Matthew Vaughn, who has previously worked on movies like “Argylle,” “X-Men: First Class,” and the Kingsman series, to name a few.
Or simply:
This commercial is led by filmmaker Matthew Vaughn, best known for his work on “Argylle,” “X-Men: First Class,” and the Kingsman series, among other productions.
A variety of tech companies like Google and Snap have attempted to create “smart glasses,” with varying degrees of success. These businesses are keen on breaking into the “wearables” market, offering devices that blend seamlessly with daily routines and habits, going beyond what a smartphone can offer. According to projections by International Data Corporation, global shipments of wearable devices are expected to increase by 6.1% in 2024, reaching approximately 537.9 million units.
Meta is known for pioneering new technology, shaping conversations, and influencing culture, yet it seems to be approaching the Super Bowl with a more conventional approach. Typically, advertisers leverage the event to spotlight a fresh product, service, or offer, such as a new car model or complimentary Grand Slam breakfast, like Denny’s did in 2009 and 2010. Meta is wagering that the engagement of well-known celebrities with an unfamiliar yet intriguing product will be sufficient to pique interest.
Previously, Facebook (now known as Meta) attended the Super Bowl. More recently, during the 2022 event, they drew attention to their Meta Quest 2 virtual reality headset and the Horizon Worlds online gaming platform.
