Meta Quest owners can now play VR games without wearing the headset

PortalVR 2.0 is now available, letting you enjoy VR games on a monitor without a headset! Simply connect your Meta Quest to your computer, set it on a desk, and you can play SteamVR games as if you were wearing a headset.

Developer Gabor Fodor announced an update to PortalVR that allows players to use their Quest headset as a tracking device connected to a computer, letting them access the full range of games and experiences available on SteamVR. Instead of wearing the Quest as a virtual reality headset, the game is displayed on a regular monitor, and players use their Quest controllers to play.

How PortalVR 2.0 works

Fodor explains that PortalVR 2.0 works by putting your Meta Quest headset into developer mode and connecting it to a computer. Once connected, the headset functions like a tracking base station, offering accurate, continuous six-degrees-of-freedom tracking even when you’re not wearing it.

PortalVR 2.0 is a major update built on feedback from months of testing and development. A key improvement is the ability to use a Meta Quest headset as the core tracking system. Simply enable developer mode on your Quest, connect it, and PortalVR handles the setup. Once connected, you’ll have full PC-powered 6DoF tracking consistently.

This setup lets you keep the Quest connected all the time, making VR gaming feel more like playing on a Nintendo Wii. You can move the camera in the game by using a webcam to track your face and head movements, combined with the controllers, letting you lean, duck, turn, and freely adjust the view.

Fodor pointed out that players can adjust the camera settings, and use the joystick’s touch surface to rotate or change the viewing angle while playing.

3D display support and compatibility

PortalVR 2.0 now supports 3D displays and glasses. It’s compatible with monitors like the Samsung Odyssey and Leia 3D displays, letting users experience VR content with depth without needing a headset.

I’m really excited to finally release this! It took a lot of effort, but I wanted to explore if you could experience VR without a headset. And the answer is yes! I’m eager to see what people create with the new PortalVR 2.0.

Fodor verified that the software allows players to enjoy games such as Beat Saber with their regular Quest controllers, showing the game on a monitor.
