I just saw the first glimpse of what Prime Video is calling Merv, and it looks adorable! It’s a new romantic comedy with Charlie Cox and Zooey Deschanel – a pairing I’m already excited about!
The show centers around Anna (Deschanel) and Russ (Cox), a couple navigating a very uncomfortable co-parenting situation after their separation. When their dog, Merv, becomes listless following their breakup, Anna and Russ find themselves thrown back together.
So, my friend Russ is trying to help Merv get over a rough patch, and he takes him to Florida for some sunshine and relaxation. But wouldn’t you know it, Anna unexpectedly joins them! It’s great to see Merv starting to feel like himself again, and honestly, it looks like helping this poor pup heal might just lead to some romantic tension between Anna and Russ. I’ve got a sneak peek at some first-look images from Merv below – check them out!

Jessica Swale directed the movie, while Dane Clark and Linsey Stewart wrote the script. Matthew Baer and Roma Downey produced it. Zooey Deschanel and Courtney Cox star in the film, along with Chris Redd from Saturday Night Live and Emmy Award-winning actress Patricia Heaton. It runs for 105 minutes and is rated PG, making it suitable for families.
Early photos from the film highlight its sunny, Florida coast location and generally upbeat feel, with the charming connection between Zooey Deschanel and Charlie Cox taking center stage. Deschanel, famous for playing lovable and quirky characters in movies like 500 Days of Summer and the TV show New Girl, is revisiting a style she excels at. Cox, who is well-known for his serious role as Daredevil in the Marvel universe, is trying something new and showing off his range as an actor with this lighter role.
The movie is expected to be funny and heartfelt, appealing to fans of romantic comedies and general moviegoers alike, thanks to the actors’ great chemistry. The first trailer for Merv will be released on November 11th at 7:00 AM Pacific Time / 10:00 AM Eastern Time.
Early glimpses of the film suggest a story filled with the awkwardness of a breakup, the challenges of co-parenting, and the potential for getting back together – all with a lot of humor. While romantic comedies featuring dogs are uncommon, Merv appears to be different. It doesn’t just make the dog a funny sidekick; instead, Merv puts the dog at the heart of the story and focuses on the humans’ journey around him. The initial images and story details suggest Merv will be a truly memorable character.
With so many big-budget, action-packed shows available, Merv provides a refreshing change of pace – it’s charming, realistic, and heartwarming. If you enjoy romantic comedies, stories about pets, or the on-screen connection between Zooey Deschanel and Josh Cox, Merv is definitely worth checking out.
Merv is set to release on December 10, 2025, on Prime Video.
