Merriam-Webster has chosen “Slop” as its Word of the Year for 2025. The dictionary noted a significant increase in searches and use of the word online over the last year.
On December 14th, the dictionary publisher revealed that “slop” was their word of the year. They chose it because it was used so often in 2025 when people talked about online trends, the quality of content, and conversations on the internet.
I’ve noticed everyone’s been using the word “slop” lately, and it’s kinda funny. Apparently, Merriam-Webster says it’s become popular as a way to describe stuff that’s just…low effort, you know? Like, tons of content online – especially the stuff made by AI or that goes super viral – is getting labeled as “slop.” It’s basically shorthand for things that are mass-produced and not really high quality.
So, I noticed everyone was using this one word a ton this year, and it turns out it actually became Merriam-Webster’s Word of the Year! It’s kinda cool – they don’t pick it based on how often it’s used, but on how many people were suddenly looking it up in the dictionary. Basically, it shows what everyone was curious about, not just what the editors thought was important.
Honorable mentions include “Touch Grass” and “Six Seven”
In addition to the word “slop,” Merriam-Webster also pointed out other noteworthy terms that were popular in online discussions during 2025.

I’ve been seeing a lot of funny online slang lately! One phrase I keep coming across is “touch grass,” which is basically a playful way of telling someone to go outside and get some fresh air – to disconnect from the internet for a bit. And then there’s “six seven,” which just blew up everywhere thanks to memes and those short videos everyone’s making. It’s wild how quickly things go viral these days!
I was so interested to see all the ‘Words of the Year’ announcements lately! It seems like everyone has a different pick. Dictionary.com went with a whopping 67 words, which is a lot! Oxford chose ‘Rage Bait,’ Cambridge went with ‘Parasocial,’ and Collins Dictionary’s pick was ‘Vibe Coding.’ It’s wild to see how language evolves and what words really capture the moment, you know?
