Upon entering Emerald Stair within the game Avowed, one of the initial side missions you may come across is titled “Echoes from the Depths.” This quest initiates by conversing with a farmer named Josep Abaccio and initially appears straightforward; however, it soon becomes intricate and complex.

How to complete Memory of the Deep in Avowed

To begin your adventure with Memory of the Deep, make your way to Coastal Farmlands, one of the initial areas you can access upon entering Emerald Stair. In this region, locate Josep Abaccio, a farmer who’s been experiencing the mysterious disappearance of revenants on his land. Revenants are undead organisms resembling plants that have been enchanted by the animancers in Emerald Stair to serve them.

Josep Abaccio is having trouble keeping his revenants, and he’s counting on you to find out where they’re going and bring them back. He suspects that the revenants might be attracted to Lake Lacuna, so he recommends searching that area for them.

Upon reaching the lake, you’ll encounter a new figure named the Giftbearer, who is accompanied by Josep’s resurrected spirits. This enigmatic Non-Player Character (NPC) informs you that there is a Meteorite located at the bottom of the lake, and you surmise this artifact is what has been attracting the revenants to the site. The Giftbearer concurs with your theory, but he intends to claim the Meteorite for himself. Naturally, Joseph also desires the Meteorite to keep his revenants by his side.

Setting that detail aside momentarily, let me suggest that you could swim deep into the lake and effortlessly grab the meteorite. It’s resting at the bottom of a pit right in the heart of the lake, and with just that task in mind, you should be able to hold your breath long enough to dive down, grab it, and resurface. Upon retrieving it, you’ll find yourself facing an important decision.

Here are two options for you: Deliver the Meteorite to either Josep or the Messenger, and I’ll discuss the potential consequences for each choice later.

You have a choice between taking the Meteorite to Josep or the Courier. Let me explain the possible results of each action next.

  • Bring the Meteorite to Josep – You can explain to Josep that the Meteorite is dangerous, but he’ll still want it so he can study its properties. If you hand it over to him, you’ll receive 550 gold and the Chanter’s Panpipes trinket as a reward.
    • No matter how hard you persist, Josep will always want the Meteorite, so there’s no way for you to keep it.

  • Bring the Meteorite to the Giftbearer – Returning the Meteorite to the Giftbearer at the docks of the Coastal Farmlands gives you a secondary choice in the quest.
    • You can hand the rock to the NPC and he will sail on his way, completing the quest and giving you the same rewards as Josep offers.
    • However, you can also agree to a new arrangement, where the Giftbearer will remove one of your memories instead of taking the Meteorite. The memory you choose to erase doesn’t matter, but you have four to choose from.
    • If you make this choice, the Giftbearer will sail away, leaving you with the Meteorite. You can then take it to Josep to complete the Memory of the Deep quest.

No matter what choice you go with, the outcome will be similar in the long run. I chose to let the Gift-giver eliminate a distressing memory of mine and then give the Meteorite back to Josep, as it appeared he was in greater need of it. But feel free to take an alternate route by giving the Meteorite to the Gift-giver and watch him set sail, vanishing from Avowed forever.
