Even the biggest stars sometimes work on projects that nobody remembers, and Mel Gibson and Robert Downey Jr. are no exception. While fans love Gibson’s films like Lethal Weapon and Braveheart, many have likely forgotten about Forever Young or The Beaver. Similarly, despite Downey’s success with Iron Man and the Marvel movies, he’s starred in films like Heart and Souls and In Dreams that most audiences have long since forgotten.
There’s a little-known movie from 2000 starring Mel Gibson and Robert Downey Jr. that didn’t do well when it first came out. The actors had previously worked together in the 1990 action-comedy Air America. This later film was a very unusual and hard-to-market blend of genres, but it’s unique in how it showcases both Gibson and Downey Jr. in roles unlike anything they’d done before, making it a surprising and interesting find for movie fans.
‘The Singing Detective‘ Is a Madcap Mix of Genres
In addition to Mel Gibson and Robert Downey Jr., The Singing Detective boasts a strong supporting cast including Katie Holmes, Robin Wright, Jeremy Northam, Jon Polito, Alfre Woodard, Adrien Brody, and Carla Gugino. The film is inspired by Dennis Potter’s 1986 BBC series of the same name, and Potter himself wrote the screenplay. Keith Gordon directed the movie, later finding success directing episodes of popular TV shows like Homeland, Fargo, and Dexter. Despite its talented cast and creative team, this comedic mystery – which also features musical numbers – didn’t resonate with many audiences.
The show The Singing Detective centers around Dan Dark (played by Downey), a mystery novelist hospitalized with a severe skin condition called psoriasis and painful arthritis. After months of treatment and losing his ability to move easily, Dan is constantly frustrated and irritable. His illness also causes him to have vivid, musical hallucinations – he imagines hospital staff performing elaborate song-and-dance routines, often joining in to sing classics like “Mr. Sandman” and “At the Hop.” Because of his declining mental state, Dan begins seeing a psychiatrist, Dr. Gibbon (Gibson). The two form an unusual pair – Downey wears extensive makeup to portray his character’s skin condition, while Gibson sports a balding hairstyle for his role.
Dr. Gibbon believes the novel, The Secret Detective, holds the key to understanding Dan. As they analyze the book together, the movie’s story begins to unfold, revealing connections between the fictional characters and the author’s personal life. We also see glimpses of Dan’s difficult childhood and how those experiences shaped his stories. Throughout the film, the boundaries between what’s real, what’s fiction, and what’s imagined become increasingly unclear. This creates a fast-paced, somewhat unpredictable story that, despite its genre-bending nature, is captivating due to its ambitious storytelling.

Despite receiving generally negative reviews and a low 40% score on Rotten Tomatoes, The Singing Detective did earn praise for Robert Downey Jr.’s performance. However, the film struggled in theaters, showing on just 49 screens and earning a worldwide total of only $435,625. It seems the studio didn’t quite know how to market it – it didn’t fully satisfy fans of detective stories, and its musical numbers weren’t as strong as those in other popular musicals at the time. As a result of its poor performance and critical reception, The Singing Detective remains a relatively unknown film from Mel Gibson and Robert Downey Jr. It’s not a movie everyone will enjoy, but it’s so unusual that many believe it has to be seen to be understood.
