
The creator of Megabonk didn’t win in The Game Awards’ Debut Indie category, but that led to another opportunity.
Megabonk was up for the Best Debut Indie award on November 17th, and it seemed like a done deal until the developer, Vedinad, pulled out of consideration at The Game Awards the following day. Vedinad felt Megabonk didn’t qualify for the “debut” category because he’d previously released games under different studio names, meaning it wasn’t actually his first game.
He expressed his gratitude to fans, shared how much the recognition meant to him, and decided to step down on his own. Geoff Keighley quickly confirmed the news, and there was a brief worry that Megabonk’s streak of awards might end before December.
But on December 1, it shifted again.
Megabonk lands a bigger The Game Awards nomination
Vedinad shared on X (formerly Twitter) that Megabonk has been nominated for the Players’ Voice award. He announced the news with the enthusiastic message, “WE’RE SO BACK,” accompanied by a drawing of a human-like Fox character injecting himself with ‘hopium’ – a playful expression of optimism.

This nomination feels special because it comes straight from the fans themselves. The Players’ Voice category is decided entirely by voting, over three stages. The first round saw a lot of big names qualify, including highly anticipated games like Elden Ring, Nightreign, Hollow Knight Silksong, Hades II, Fortnite, Genshin Impact, Battlefield 6, Dispatch, Split Fiction, and many other games expected in 2025.
Megabonk is now included thanks to fan support, not just strict rules, and this feels like a more genuine recognition of the game’s growing popularity.
Players’ Voice has consistently highlighted games that attract a large player base. Megabonk fitting into this group feels more organic than when it was first introduced.
