MCU’s X-Men Movie Gets New Script From Creator Of 98% RT Score Emmy-Winning TV Show

The Marvel Cinematic Universe is bringing the X-Men to the big screen, and they’ve just added some major talent to the project.

Director Jake Schreier recently told Collider that his upcoming X-Men movie for Marvel Studios is still in development. While Michael Lesslie originally wrote the script, it’s now being rewritten by Lee Sung Jin, the creator of Beef, and Joanna Calo, who also worked on Schreier’s Thunderbolts film. Schreier explained that he, Sung Jin, and Calo have a strong working relationship, having collaborated on Season 1 of Beef and Thunderbolts.

As a huge X-Men fan, I’m really excited to hear that Calo and Jin are helping bring the mutants into the Marvel Cinematic Universe! Apparently, they’re already working on a draft, which is fantastic. I remember reading that the studio first wanted Jake Schreier to direct a reboot way back in 2025, just after Thunderbolts came out. While Thunderbolts didn’t make a ton of money, critics really liked the way he developed his characters, and that ultimately led to him being officially named the director for the X-Men movie in July of 2025. It’s great to see character work being rewarded like this!

The Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) has been subtly preparing for the introduction of mutants through its Multiverse Saga, starting with characters like Ms. Marvel and Namor. Though the X-Men films previously made by Fox have been acknowledged in recent Marvel movies, some of those original actors will return for one last appearance in Avengers: Doomsday this December. This film will be the second-to-last movie in Phase 6 of the MCU.

As of today, Marvel hasn’t announced a filming date for the new X-Men movie. This is likely because Marvel is focusing on Avengers: Secret Wars, which will conclude Phase 6 and the entire Multiverse Saga. The X-Men are expected to be a major focus in Phase 7, and many believe this new phase will be known as the Mutant Saga.

There’s a lot of excitement about how the X-Men might be introduced into the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and one popular idea involves a storyline similar to the Spider-Man: Brand New Day comic. Rumors suggest Sadie Sink, known for Stranger Things, will play Jean Grey, and potentially reprise that role from Avengers: Secret Wars. Some believe Jean Grey could become a key figure in the next major phase of Marvel stories.

If the script comes together this year, they might start casting in late 2026, with the goal of beginning production in 2027. Given Marvel’s current release schedule, the X-Men movie could potentially be released in 2028.

Marvel Studios’ X-Men has yet to get an official release date.
