Stephen McFeely, a longtime Marvel screenwriter, is the one who proposed the idea that enticed the Russo Brothers to return to the MCU for “Doomsday” and “Secret Wars” after “Avengers: Endgame”. Interestingly, McFeely initially declined the opportunity to write more Marvel movies, bluntly saying “no” to the Russos.
Anthony Russo mentioned that after ‘Endgame’ wrapped up, it took some time for us to consider it as anything other than the conclusion. However, what truly happened was that we unintentionally stumbled upon an idea that sparked our collective imagination. This idea wasn’t foreseeable until it materialized, and once it did, we realized, ‘This is a tale we need to share.’
Joe Russo mentioned that there were concepts we struggled to comprehend before this one, but we never managed to find a suitable narrative for them. He recounted, “I remember telling Steve, ‘Hey, here’s a wild thought: what if we revisit ‘Secret Wars’?’ Your response was a firm ‘No way, nope.’ And then you ended the call. But the next day at 7:30, you called back and said, ‘Alright, I have an idea.’
The upcoming films titled “Avengers: Doomsday” and “Secret Wars” are being written by long-term Marvel screenwriters, Markus and McFeely, known for creating “Agent Carter”, writing three “Captain America” movies, and penning “Avengers: Infinity War” and “Avengers: Endgame”. The Russo Brothers have directed four of these films. Although McFeely’s complete plan for the next Avengers films is still under wraps, it does involve the comeback of Robert Downey Jr., reprising his role as Iron Man but this time as the antagonist, Doctor Doom, in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU).
Previously, Joe Russo confided in GamesRadar+ that discussions regarding another project between the filmmakers and Downey were underway when the concept of “Doomsday” and “Secret Wars” was suggested. This intriguing idea proved irresistible to them all.
Joe mentioned that it wouldn’t make sense to return if the story didn’t have the potential to rival ‘Infinity War’ and ‘Endgame.’ He suggested that there must be a powerful, exciting core concept at play.
The Russo Brothers are joining forces with McFeely and Markus yet again for the Netflix film “The Electric State,” which premieres on March 14. On the other hand, “Avengers: Doomsday” is slated for release by Disney on May 1, 2026, with production starting this year.
