A star known from Avatar and the Marvel Cinematic Universe headlines this 2011 action movie, which will be available to stream for free in December. The film features a talented and engaging lead actor, also famous for Guardians of the Galaxy and an Academy Award winner. It was co-written and produced by the creator of Taken and The Fifth Element, and directed by Olivier Megaton, who also directed Transporter 3 and Taken 2. Though largely overlooked, the movie originally started as a follow-up to a well-known action classic and, with a little imagination, can still be seen as one.
The action thriller, Colombiana, features Zoe Saldaña as a highly skilled assassin on a violent quest to avenge her parents’ deaths. The film also stars Michael Vartan, Cliff Curtis, Lennie James, Callum Blue, and Jordi Mollà. Colombiana will be available to stream for free starting December 1, 2025. Read the official synopsis below for more details.
In 1992, a young girl in Bogota witnessed the brutal murder of her parents by a crime boss named Don Luis and his assistant, Marco. Fifteen years later, she’s grown up to be Cataleya, a skilled contract killer working for her uncle in Chicago. Known for leaving a lipstick orchid drawing on each of her targets, Cataleya expertly carries out her missions while secretly planning revenge for her family’s death.
‘Colombiana’ Started Life as a Sequel to One of Luc Besson’s Best Movies
When Colombiana was released, it sparked a lot of disagreement between critics and viewers. Critics gave the action movie a low score of 29% on Rotten Tomatoes, but audiences enjoyed it much more, giving it a 67% rating on Popcornmeter. While critics had issues with the movie’s direction and style, they did praise Zoe Saldaña’s performance. Viewers, on the other hand, called Colombiana “intense and riveting” and “pure, simple fun,” proving that sometimes that’s all you need from an action-packed thriller.
What really sets Colombiana apart is its connection to a well-known action movie, Luc Besson’s Léon: The Professional. Released in 1994, Léon received positive reviews and currently holds a 76% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Audiences loved it even more, giving it a 95% score – it’s a thrilling and unique story about a hitman and the young girl he takes under his wing.
A sequel to Léon: The Professional was planned at one point. Director Luc Besson wrote a script called Mathilda, which would have featured a grown-up version of Natalie Portman’s character, now working as a professional hitwoman – similar to Jean Reno’s role in the original film. Ultimately, the sequel didn’t happen. Besson used elements of the script to create Colombiana, resulting in an interesting connection between Léon: The Professional and the Zoe Saldaña thriller.
