The Marvel Cinematic Universe is known for bringing heroes together in epic team-ups. But with big events like *Avengers: Doomsday* and *Avengers: Secret Wars* on the horizon, actor Mike Colter, who played Luke Cage, believes some heroes shouldn’t be involved in universe-level conflicts with the Avengers. He feels it wouldn’t be right for his Harlem-based character to face threats of that magnitude alongside Earth’s Mightiest Heroes.
Why doesn’t Mike Colter want to see Luke Cage fighting villains like Thanos?
At a recent Edmonton Expo panel, Mike Colter shared his opinion that Luke Cage is better suited as a grounded, street-level hero rather than joining the Avengers to fight massive threats like Thanos or Doctor Doom. He pointed to the treatment of Hulk in *Avengers: Infinity War* – specifically, how easily Thanos defeated him – as a reason. Colter questioned why Luke Cage would fare any better, suggesting Thanos would similarly overpower him.
So far in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), Luke Cage has only teamed up with a few other heroes: Daredevil (Charlie Cox), Jessica Jones (Krysten Ritter), and Iron Fist (Finn Jones). They were all members of a team called The Defenders.
Mike Colter hasn’t appeared as Luke Cage in the Marvel Cinematic Universe since the second season of the Netflix series *Luke Cage* finished in 2018. Despite this, rumors suggest Marvel might bring him back, possibly in a future season of *Daredevil: Born Again*. However, Colter himself has downplayed these rumors, stating at a fan event that he hasn’t received any indication a return is planned, and pointing out that Marvel hasn’t recently revived any of its Netflix shows.
The second season of Born Again will center on Matt Murdock, a.k.a. Daredevil, as he builds a team to fight Mayor Kingpin and the task force Kingpin has assembled against vigilantes. Now that Jessica Jones (played by Ritter) is confirmed to appear, it’s likely Daredevil will seek help from his old teammates, the Defenders.
While we wait for news about Luke Cage’s return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, fans can rewatch his series on Disney+. The next big team-up movie, Avengers: Secret Wars, is currently scheduled for release in December 2027.
