As a longtime fan, I’m thrilled to report that a live-action adaptation of the critically acclaimed action game *Sleeping Dogs* is finally moving forward! It’s been a long and winding road – the project has stalled a few times over the years. In fact, Donnie Yen, the incredible martial arts star known for *John Wick*, championed this for years, but unfortunately had to step away earlier this year. But the good news? A script is now complete, which means we’re one step closer to seeing this fantastic story come to life on the big screen!
Originally launched in 2012 for consoles like PlayStation and Xbox, *Sleeping Dogs* is an action game heavily inspired by Hong Kong crime films, especially the *Infernal Affairs* trilogy. Players take on the role of an undercover cop working to take down the Sun On Yee Triad. Packed with martial arts combat, shooting, and detective work – everything an action movie fan could want – *Sleeping Dogs* feels like it was made to be adapted into a film. Surprisingly, turning it into a movie has been challenging.
Simu Liu, known for his role in Marvel’s *Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings*, is now set to star in the *Sleeping Dogs* movie. He recently announced on Instagram that a script has been completed. Earlier this year, Liu shared that he was collaborating with the owners of the *Sleeping Dogs* rights to make a film, and it seems he’s made quick progress!
A ‘Sleeping Dogs’ Movie Is Finally Happening
After Simu Liu hinted at his involvement, fans immediately voiced their support for him as Wei Shen, an ex-San Francisco police officer sent to Hong Kong to go undercover within a dangerous Triad. Now, those fans will be thrilled to hear that the story of *Sleeping Dogs* is finally becoming a live-action series.
A movie adaptation of the video game *Sleeping Dogs* has been in development for a while, with Donnie Yen – known for his roles in *Star Wars* and *John Wick* – actively trying to make it happen. However, Yen recently shared that his version of the project is no longer moving forward. He explained that he dedicated years and even some of his own money to securing scripts and rights, but ultimately, things fell through. He acknowledged the unpredictable nature of Hollywood and expressed hope for future opportunities. Hopefully, Liu’s new take on the project will include a role for Yen.
Simu Liu is famous for playing Shang-Chi in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and has also appeared in films like *Barbie*, *Kim’s Convenience*, and *Arthur the King*. In addition to his work in *Sleeping Dogs*, he has several upcoming projects, including the next two *Avengers* movies – *Avengers: Doomsday* and *Avengers: Secret Wars* – and a new science fiction spy series called *The Copenhagen Test*.
