MCU Director’s Live-Action Naruto Movie Gets Disappointing Update

This live-action movie has been stuck in development for so long – announced almost ten years ago – that many fans may have forgotten about it. While the script recently saw some improvements, a key creative team member has now confirmed the project is stalled again, with no clear date for when it might move forward.

Screenwriter Tasha Huo recently shared a disappointing update on the live-action Naruto film. When asked for news, she admitted she has nothing new to share, saying she’s in the same position as fans – eagerly awaiting progress on the project. While she apologized for not having more details, Huo expressed her own excitement about seeing the finished movie.

Naruto Live-Action Movie Continues to be in Production Limbo

The main reason we haven’t heard much about the project lately seems to be director Destin Daniel Cretton’s busy schedule. Although Huo confirmed things were moving forward in August 2024, Cretton is now focused on his work with Marvel. He’s currently directing the next Spider-Man movie, Spider-Man: Brand New Day, which is set to come out in theaters in July 2026.

Destin Daniel Cretton’s busy schedule is complicated by his work on a follow-up to his successful 2021 film, Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings. However, the future of that sequel is uncertain given changes in Marvel’s overall plans. If the Shang-Chi sequel is cancelled or postponed, Cretton could potentially focus on the live-action Naruto project. For now, though, Naruto remains on hold.

Considering past trends, Lionsgate will probably try to quickly begin production on the movie to prevent delays. Hollywood is clearly very interested in bringing popular anime series to life, as shown by Legendary Entertainment’s work on One Piece and Mobile Suit Gundam. Since Naruto remains incredibly popular on streaming services worldwide even now, the studio has a strong reason to make sure the story of the Hidden Leaf Village is told in a film.

I’ve been following the potential live-action Naruto movie for ages, and it’s been a real rollercoaster! It all started way back in 2015 when Lionsgate first announced it. For a while, it looked promising with The Greatest Showman‘s Michael Gracey set to direct and Avi Arad producing. Then, at Jump Festa in 2016, we got even more excited when Masashi Kishimoto, the creator of Naruto himself, signed on to help develop the movie and make sure it stayed true to the manga. But honestly, after years of silence, a lot of us started to think it was never going to happen.

Fans received a boost of optimism in February 2024 when Lionsgate confirmed Destin Daniel Cretton would be writing and directing the movie adaptation. This news was seen as a major turning point for the series, especially given Cretton’s impressive track record.
