A McDonald’s restaurant in China is getting a lot of attention online because it’s now using robots to welcome customers and deliver their meals.
If you’ve visited a fast food restaurant recently, you’ve probably noticed a big change: most places now encourage customers to order using self-service kiosks. You simply approach a screen, place your order, and wait for it to be prepared.
But China is now pushing the boundaries of automation in fast food. For example, a McDonald’s restaurant in Shanghai is currently trying out robot greeters to help serve customers.
Robots from Keenon Robotics in China are now working at McDonald’s restaurants. They’re even designed to look the part, sporting the restaurant’s famous red uniform and golden arches logo.
Chinese McDonald’s actually has robot workers
Both human-like robots and robots designed to help people are being tested. The human-like robots can follow instructions and even copy the way customers move.
The company announced on Facebook that their Humanoid robots are now being deployed for public testing.
This demonstrates how service automation is increasingly integrated into restaurants worldwide, and how technology is enhancing the dining experience for everyone.
Even though robots greet you and bring your food if you’re dining in, people are still the ones cooking the meals. This restaurant isn’t fully automated yet.
Also, many restaurants are discovering it’s difficult to completely replace people with AI and robots.
In October, a Singapore restaurant called Wok A.I. had to temporarily close a location because it didn’t have enough staff. While a robot handled the cooking, the restaurant still needed people to prepare ingredients and serve customers.
A restaurant in San Jose, California, experienced a chaotic scene when its robotic server unexpectedly went haywire and began damaging tables.
