Maya Higa’s Alveus Sanctuary successfully raised $1 million to launch the Alveus Research & Recovery Institute, a new organization dedicated to protecting wildlife and helping endangered species bounce back.
Maya hosted a fundraiser called the Pixel Project where people could donate $100 to reveal one pixel of a digital artwork during her Twitch stream. As donations came in, the image slowly appeared, and after three days, all 10,000 pixels were unlocked, completing the artwork and raising a total of $1 million.
Alveus announced on X (formerly Twitter) that they successfully reached their fundraising goal for the Pixel Project. They raised $1 million in just three days to support their research and recovery institute, and expressed being overwhelmed with gratitude.
We’ve reached our goal for The Pixel Project! In just three days, we raised $1,000,000 to fund our research and recovery institute. We’re absolutely amazed and grateful for the incredible support.

The money will be used to create the Alveus Research & Recovery Institute, dedicated to breeding programs for critically endangered Red wolves and Mexican Gray wolves to help save these species.
The organization announced they are expanding their Alveus project into outdoor environments. Thanks to generous support, they’ve raised $1,000,000 to launch the Alveus Research & Recovery Institute and begin its initial development.

Thanks to the generosity of our donors, every one of the 10,000 pixels on our mural now displays the name of a key early supporter of the Institute. While the mural is complete, we still need your help to continue our important work and keep the Institute thriving.
According to Alveus, there are only 18 Red wolves and 286 Mexican Gray wolves left in the wild. The organization works to keep these wolves thriving in managed care, with the eventual hope of returning them to their native environments.
