Max Verstappen had a disappointing weekend at the Chinese Grand Prix and strongly criticized recent Formula 1 rule changes. He felt the changes had made the racing less serious and more chaotic, comparing it to the video game Mario Kart.
Kimi Antonelli won the second Formula 1 race of the 2026 season. Unfortunately, Max Verstappen’s race was cut short when his engine failed after only 10 laps, ending his chances of a good result.
It’s come to light that Verstappen recently referenced earlier statements he made in 2023. He’d predicted that upcoming rule changes and new technology would negatively impact the quality of the racing, and it now appears those predictions were accurate.
Max Verstappen feels the current Formula 1 racing with its battery-powered boosts is frustrating and unpredictable. He compared it to the video game Mario Kart, where overtaking someone can quickly be reversed on the next stretch of the track. He thinks the system is essentially a bit of a joke.

Max Verstappen is not happy after Chinese Grand Prix
After the race, Verstappen expressed his frustration with the ability for drivers to gain an advantage using a boost, saying it made Formula 1 feel more like a video game like Mario Kart than a true racing competition. He stated that anyone who enjoys this aspect clearly doesn’t understand what real racing is about.
Honestly, it’s not enjoyable. It’s Mario Kart, and it doesn’t feel like actual racing. You get a speed boost, then your battery dies and everyone flies past you again. I think it’s ridiculous, and I’d feel the same way even if I was winning – I just want the game to be a good racing experience.
I’m not angry about my current situation, but the whole system is broken. It’s really hurting the sport, and ultimately, those responsible will face consequences.
The idea of this change in Formula 1 was first discussed in 2023, and Verstappen immediately told officials it would likely cause problems. While he predicted this outcome, he doesn’t appear to be gloating now that it’s happening – at least, not outwardly.
He stated that people should have paid attention last year, in 2023, and expressed hope that this experience will prevent similar issues from occurring again.
Other drivers may not want things to change
Max Verstappen isn’t the only driver experiencing difficulties this season. The Aston Martin team is struggling with significant car problems; vibrations are so severe that Fernando Alonso and Lance Stroll risk nerve damage if they complete a race.
However, some drivers might prefer the current rules remain unchanged, especially considering how well their season has begun. Verstappen acknowledges that while he thinks the rules should be reverted, he understands why those currently performing well wouldn’t want to return to the previous system.
He explained that it’s important to choose your words carefully when discussing this issue. They’re currently having conversations about it, and the other parties understand the drivers’ perspective.
It’s understandable why some people are happy with the current situation – they’re benefiting from it, and it makes sense not to willingly give up an advantage. However, most drivers, and I believe true Formula 1 fans, aren’t thrilled with it.
This situation is driven by politics. Some individuals or teams believe they currently have an edge and want to capitalize on it, which I understand. However, it’s ultimately harmful to the sport, and I hope we can resolve it quickly.
