Matthew Gray Gubler’s upcoming CBS crime drama, Einstein, has cast a new co-star after facing delays for several months.
Originally revealed in October 2024, the series Einstein is inspired by a German show of the same name. It centers around Lew Einstein, a gifted but somewhat lost college professor and the great-grandson of Albert Einstein. Actor Jonathan Gubler plays Lew, who enjoys a comfortable life until he’s unexpectedly partnered with Detective Inspector Maddie Paris (played by Rosa Salazar, known for Alita: Battle Angel). She needs his sharp mind to help her crack difficult cases.
According to Deadline, Melissa Fumero, known for her role in Brooklyn Nine-Nine, will be joining the cast of Einstein, replacing Jess Salguero. She’ll play Teri, a tough and dedicated Detective Inspector with the New Jersey State Police. The character is described as intelligent and self-driven, but also conflicted about partnering with Professor Einstein, and holds both her colleagues and herself to very high standards.
The lead actors are being replaced because of a change in Dylan O’Brien’s availability. After the crime drama Einstein was postponed until the 2026-2027 TV season, O’Brien contacted CBS and CBS Studios to request to leave the show. CBS granted the request, and O’Brien is no longer with the production.
CBS executives explained the delay of the Einstein series, originally announced for late 2024, was intentional. They wanted to pair it with the new show led by Matthew Gray Gubler and give both series a more extensive development and marketing period. This strategy aimed to leverage the dedicated fanbase Gubler established during his time as Dr. Spencer Reid on Criminal Minds.
The new crime series comes from Andy Breckman, who created the show Monk, and director Randy Zisk. It’s a bit of a return to familiar territory for Matthew Gray Gubler, who previously starred in Criminal Minds, which ran for 15 seasons on CBS. The show recently continued with a revival called Criminal Minds: Evolution on Paramount+, and Gubler made a quick appearance reprising his role as Dr. Reid.
Melissa Fumero is probably most famous for playing Amy Santiago on the hit TV show Brooklyn Nine-Nine. She’s also recently appeared in Grosse Pointe Garden Society on NBC, and the comedy-thriller series Based on a True Story. Next, she’ll be starring in Red Dirt, a thriller movie about two brothers who come together for revenge after their family is murdered.
