Matthew Beem explains why he still lives in his mom’s basement despite having 7M subscribers

Despite earning approximately $50,000 a month from his popular videos, YouTube creator Matthew Beem shared that he still lives with his mother in her basement.

Matthew Beem is a hugely popular creator on YouTube, boasting over 7 million subscribers. He’s famous for his daring challenges and ambitious projects, often collaborating with other well-known online personalities like IShowSpeed, Adin Ross, and The Rizzler.

His videos consistently get millions of views and are so popular and energetic that people often compare them to the work of MrBeast, one of YouTube’s biggest stars.

Beem makes viral hits from mom’s basement while barely paying himself

Beem, a popular YouTuber with over 275 videos and millions of views, revealed that he doesn’t earn as much money as people might think. He explained that being an influencer isn’t always as profitable as it seems.

He said each video costs him around $19,000 to produce, not including employee salaries. When he factors in payroll, his monthly expenses reach $75,000.

Beem makes money in two main ways: ads on his YouTube videos and partnerships with brands managed by his company, Night Media. He says 45% of his income comes from YouTube ads, while 55% comes from these brand deals.

Making his videos and paying his team is very expensive, so he often doesn’t take a salary. When he does pay himself, it’s usually around $4,000 a month, and he puts everything else back into improving his channel.

He explained that success often looks different up close. When he was younger, he assumed successful people, particularly those in creative fields, were doing incredibly well. Now he understands they’re often just getting by, managing to survive rather than truly thrive.

Beem shared that he’s currently living with his mother to save money while he builds his online channel, with a goal of reaching 10 million subscribers.

A few years ago, if someone had told me I’d have nearly eight million subscribers but still be living with my mom and sometimes struggle to pay myself, I would’ve been picturing which Lamborghini I was driving. But that’s not how things turned out.

Beem isn’t alone in facing financial challenges with online content. Even MrBeast, known for his viral videos, admits to losing significant money – reportedly $110 million in 2024. Surprisingly, despite these losses, his company, Beast Industries, is still valued by investors at an impressive $5 billion.

So, about MrBeast, Beem told me he actually earned the guy’s respect! Apparently, he built a completely custom car based on MrBeast himself – it was a huge risk, but it totally paid off. It’s awesome to think that a creative project like that could get noticed by someone like him.
