Matt Damon Explains Why The Odyssey is the ‘Pinnacle’ of His Career

Matt Damon, a veteran of over three decades in Hollywood, considers his work on The Odyssey to be the high point of his career.

What did Matt Damon say about The Odyssey?

Matt Damon and Ben Affleck were on Jimmy Fallon’s show to talk about their new Netflix film, ‘The Rip.’ During the interview, Damon shared exciting news: he’s been cast as the lead in Christopher Nolan’s big-screen version of ‘The Odyssey,’ calling it a wonderful opportunity.

“It was absolutely the pinnacle of my entire career,” Damon said.

Ben Affleck got a rare behind-the-scenes look at the large-scale movie production. Matt Damon playfully pointed out that Affleck was the only visitor during the entire six-month shoot, highlighting how focused the cast and crew were on finishing the film and having no time for guests or distractions.

Damon described the project as incredibly demanding, saying it consumed all their time and energy. He’d never worked on a film that required such intense effort from everyone involved. He told Affleck that every shooting location and every day of work felt more challenging than anything he’d experienced in his entire career.

In Homer’s The Odyssey, Damon plays Odysseus, the king of Ithaca. After the Trojan War, Odysseus faces many dangers on his long trip back home, including an encounter with a one-eyed giant called a Cyclops.

Damon leads an impressive cast featuring Tom Holland, Anne Hathaway, Robert Pattinson, Lupita Nyong’o, Zendaya, Jon Bernthal, Benny Safdie, John Leguizamo, Himesh Patel, Mia Goth, and Charlize Theron.

Christopher Nolan’s latest film, The Odyssey, is inspired by Homer’s classic poem. He both wrote and directed the movie, and produced it with Emma Thomas. This marks Nolan’s first project following the success of his Oscar-winning film, Oppenheimer.

The Odyssey is scheduled to be released on July 17, 2026.
