Matlock Season 2’s Latest Twist Reveals How Ruthless Matty And Olympia Can Get, But Kathy Bates May Have Delivered Her Best Performance To Date

Be warned: this article contains spoilers for the second episode of *Matlock*’s second season, titled “Another Matlock.” You can watch it the day after it airs with a Paramount+ subscription.

After the first season of *Matlock* revealed that Julian had concealed the Wellbrexa document Matty was seeking, the storyline became even more complex. Now, in the fall of 2025, Olympia’s choice to protect the father of her children has shifted the focus of the investigation to Senior. Only two episodes into Season 2, Matty and Olympia have already repeatedly changed their minds about whether they’ll cooperate with each other.

In the latest episode of “Another Matlock,” Olympia did something that could ruin her relationship, and both she and Matty had some heated moments. However, the real standout was Kathy Bates, who brilliantly portrayed Matty’s explosive anger – arguably the angriest we’ve ever seen the character. This outburst is likely to have serious consequences, but it makes for compelling television.

Matty Vs. Olympia

The season two premiere ended with Matty seemingly about to succeed after stealing a document she and Edwin planned to take to the *Times*. However, in the episode “Another Matlock,” Olympia revealed the document was a fake – the real one was hidden in Connecticut. Olympia then kept Matty tied up in court for the day, allowing her to hit the road with Edwin to retrieve the genuine article. Everything seemed to be falling into place, but would it actually work out?

Olympia made a grand gesture, dramatically returning to Matty with a stack of empty papers. She explained she’d abandoned Edwin by the roadside, leaving him with only a few Twizzlers and no way to contact anyone. Olympia realized Matty had broken the law multiple times during the first season while searching for proof, and now both she and Edwin were in serious legal jeopardy. She threatened that this could lead to Alfie losing custody of his father, who struggles with addiction.

Matty was furious that her family had been threatened. Her response was a harsh speech—it would have sounded like something a villain would say, except everyone knew what had happened earlier in the season. She practically yelled the words at her old friend, saying:

Do you really think they’ll find me guilty? I could commit any crime, even something drastic like destroying this building, and people would still adore me. I’ll act innocent, a vulnerable, heartbroken woman. I’m beyond reproach, and if you don’t get me that document tonight, your children will suffer the consequences – they’ll be left without parents.

I was already a firm believer in Kathy Bates’ talent after seeing her in Season 1 – she absolutely deserved her Critics Choice Award! But if I hadn’t been convinced then, this speech would have sealed the deal. Honestly, I think her performance was just as strong as Britt Lower’s (who won the Emmy for *Severance* back in September), and she could have easily taken home the award herself.

I have to say, Bates was fantastic in Season 1 with those emotionally charged performances, but one of the joys of *Matlock* is watching Matty seamlessly transform – from sharp lawyer to the sweet, grandmotherly figure everyone feels comfortable opening up to. But this scene? Wow. I honestly haven’t seen Matty quite this fiery before. She usually keeps everything so carefully composed, but for a few moments there, she just *lost* it with Olympia – and it was genuinely shocking.

Seeing Matty lose it, combined with Olympia’s response and the memories of Matty’s Season 1 investigation, made me question if Olympia regretted giving that speech. It didn’t take long to find out she did.

Instead of the Wellbrexa document, Kathy sent Matty a recording of herself making intimidating claims and subtly threatening Olympia’s children, giving her significant power over the Kingston family. Now, it’s up to the Kingstons to respond, though their options might be limited. Kathy’s actions were brilliantly executed, but Matty made a quick, possibly unwise, decision.

What’s Next For Matty And Olympia?

The plot twist was really well-written. Matty unexpectedly fell into a trap that Olympia had originally set in Season 1, and Olympia cleverly provoked Matty into losing her cool – mirroring exactly what Matty had done to a witness earlier that day.

Matty and Olympia are stuck in another disagreement, and I don’t think their friendship can be saved unless something truly dramatic happens to bring them together. While they both want to defeat Senior, they’ve also hurt each other deeply. Honestly, I’m completely hooked, especially with Kathy Bates and Skye P. Marshall involved!

Don’t miss new episodes of *Matlock* Season 2, airing Thursdays at 9 p.m. Eastern on CBS, or stream them on Paramount+. It’s hard to guess what will happen with Matty and Olympia as they constantly shift power dynamics, but I’m certain of one thing: I hope Edwin’s fondness for Twizzlers becomes a recurring gag throughout the new season.

The funniest moments of the episode for me were Olympia trying to bribe someone with Twizzlers, and Edwin’s awkward attempt to hide his Twizzler-eating from his wife on the phone. It was a small, silly storyline, but it really stood out amidst all the other drama.
