‘Masked Singer’ Producer Smart Dog Media and TV Asahi Team for Competition Series ‘Song vs. Dance’ (EXCLUSIVE)

In collaboration with award-winning producers Craig and Clara Plestis from Smart Dog Media, TV Asahi – a prominent commercial television station in Japan – is set to jointly produce an exciting new talent competition called “Song vs. Dance.

The team at Smart Dog Media, a pair of dynamic executives, will take on the role of executive producers. Specifically, Takaaki Kitano will manage production activities in Japan. Smart Dog Media is associated with Paradigm, an agency that facilitated the format agreement with TV Asahi.

In the competitive world of talent shows, Smart Dog Media has achieved significant victories, notably being instrumental in bringing “The Masked Singer” to our television screens and securing impressive viewership numbers.

In the upcoming production, performers will face off in a contest modeled after popular video games, with only one victor emerging at the end. The central question this show aims to answer is: Which is superior, music or dance? The creators aspire for it to become the next global sensation in the variety genre. The media company Smart Dog Media and TV Asahi will unveil “Song vs. Dance” during the premiere of MIP London in February.

This show represents TV Asahi’s initial collaboration with an American production partner, as they team up with Smart Dog Media to present this innovative format to viewers in Japan for the first time.

Smart Dog Media offers programming like “The Masked Dancer”, “Minute to Win It”, and “Dick Van Dyke’s 98 Years of Magic”. Meanwhile, TV Asahi Corporation airs children’s cartoons such as “Doraemon” and “Shin chan”, along with long-running drama series like the internationally distributed “Doctor-X” series (present in over 190 countries) and the detective series “AIBOU (Detective Duo)” spanning 23 seasons. In terms of variety shows, it has supported “London Hearts”, which is accessible in more than ten countries and regions across Europe and Asia.

Smart Dog Media expressed their enthusiasm about partnering with TV Asahi on an innovative, one-of-a-kind series. This marks the first variety show to pit two prominent entertainment genres in intense confrontations. The format aims to embody Japanese pop culture, video game aesthetics, and game structure, offering a distinctive appearance and atmosphere for a performance competition show. We anticipate that this series will captivate audiences worldwide for many generations. We designed the show to be similar to our ‘The Masked Singer’: daring, unique, and unprecedented.

Ever since last June, I’ve been collaborating with Craig and Clara on some fantastic ideas, and we’ve come up with a truly innovative format: ‘Song vs. Dance.’ I’m beyond excited to be co-producing this fresh and revolutionary show with the Smart Dog Media team, led by Craig and Clara. ‘Song vs. Dance’ is a one-of-a-kind musical competition where vocalists and dancers go head-to-head in a heartfelt battle for supremacy. The only criteria for judging are ‘which performance moved you the most.’ This straightforward yet entirely novel format promises to bring an innovative entertainment program that viewers of all ages can appreciate. Get ready for the exhilarating clashes of top-tier performers, as Japan showcases its talents on a global stage.

Information about when “Song vs. Dance” will debut, who the cast members are, and its broadcast schedule will be shared within the next few months.
