Marvel is correcting a significant error in its Disney+ shows. Jon Bernthal, who returned as Daredevil last year, will appear in two projects in 2026: the film Spider-Man: Brand New Day (July 31st) and a new standalone special featuring his character, Frank Castle. While both are anticipated, the special could have a more substantial effect on the future of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Marvel Studios has announced the title of its third special presentation: Punisher One-Shot Special. Although the title sounds simple, it’s a nod to a memorable element from the Infinity Saga. This special is also an important step for Marvel’s future streaming plans, which is exciting news as the MCU enters a new phase.
The Punisher Revives the MCU’s One-Shot Strategy
The upcoming Punisher special’s title references a tactic used early in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. During the first two phases of the MCU, short films called “one-shots” were created to bridge the gaps between major movie releases. These shorts were usually included as bonus content on home video releases of those films.
The collection includes a couple of interesting shorts. One shows Coulson interrupting a gas station robbery while traveling to investigate where Thor’s hammer landed. Another reveals a secret operation where Coulson and agent Jasper Sitwell work together to stop their bosses from bringing Emil Blonsky into the early stages of the Avengers program.
Some of Marvel’s one-shot films introduce storylines that continue into bigger projects. For instance, “All Hail the King” follows the character Trevor Slattery and reveals that the real Mandarin exists and is seeking to restore his reputation. This plot thread is explored in Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings and recently reappears in the Disney+ series Wonder Man.
Marvel’s short films are enjoyable and simple additions to its huge superhero world. They aren’t essential to the main story, but they add depth to the universe and explain some unanswered questions from the movies. The name ‘one-shot’ is a nod to older comic book stories that served a similar purpose. Using this term for the new Punisher special might indicate Marvel will be creating more of these standalone stories as it moves beyond its current Multiverse Saga.
Will the MCU Focus More on One-Shots After the Multiverse Saga?
Marvel’s storytelling on Disney+ hasn’t been very successful with its miniseries lately. The six-episode format doesn’t quite work – it’s too long for viewers who just want a quick watch, and not long enough for those who want in-depth, multi-season stories. Marvel needs to rethink its strategy for streaming shows.
Marvel is taking a two-part strategy to improve its streaming shows. Shows like Born Again will feature lengthy, multi-season stories released each year. Meanwhile, The Punisher One-Shot Special could be an example of a different approach – a standalone story that adds to the Marvel Cinematic Universe and introduces new characters without needing viewers to commit to a full series.
Projects like Werewolf by Night and The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special paved the way for Marvel’s new approach to one-shot specials, providing a successful model for future stories. With The Punisher One-Shot Special, Marvel is revisiting a format that has proven popular. If this special does well, we can expect to see more standalone stories focusing on a wider range of MCU characters.
Marvel could more effectively introduce future leaders by using short films, or ‘one-shots.’ These offer a quick and easy way to develop new characters without requiring fans to invest in a full series right away. Along with longer shows like Daredevil, this approach could be a great solution to Marvel’s current issues with its streaming content.
Punisher: One-Shot Special will premiere on Disney+ in 2026.
