Lately, people are really debating how long movies and shows should be. Some enjoy longer experiences, while others prefer shorter, more easily digestible content. Those who like shorter formats will likely be very happy with the upcoming Wonder Man series on Disney Plus.
As a Marvel fan, it’s amazing to think that a whole series can be watched in about four hours – without even including the credits! That’s actually not much longer than the reported runtime of the Avengers: Doomsday movie. It feels like a lot of story packed into a relatively short time.
As a total movie and TV buff, I’ve been digging into the details of Wonder Man, and one episode’s runtime really jumped out at me – it’s surprisingly short, almost like it was made to fit into a quick TV dinner break!
Compared to the other seven episodes, which are all a little over 30 minutes long including credits, the fifth episode of Wonder Man, titled ‘Found Footage’, is significantly shorter. At just 25 minutes and 23 seconds, it’s the shortest live-action episode Marvel Studios has ever made.
Marvel Made Wonder Man a Microwave Dinner
If you factor in that the credits start at 20 minutes and 10 seconds, and the recap of the last episode delays the main story from beginning until 1 minute and 30 seconds in, the actual content of this episode is less than 19 minutes long.
Yeah, that’s all. Less than 19 minutes, folks.
As a movie fan, it really feels like this confirms what many of us suspected about Wonder Man – Marvel initially saw it as just something to fill space in their schedule. They barely promoted it, almost setting it up to fail, and honestly, a lot of people were bracing for a pretty bad show. But then Yahya Abdul-Mateen II and Ben Kingsley came in and completely blew those expectations away – they delivered something genuinely good despite the lack of support.
Many people are saying Wonder Man is the best live-action Marvel series so far, which is high praise considering shows like Daredevil (and the new Daredevil: Born Again), Loki, and WandaVision. It’s a shame we only got a small preview instead of a complete season.
Fortunately, the recent success of Wonder Man—a critically acclaimed show that audiences loved—has been a major win for Marvel. It currently boasts impressive ratings of 90% from critics and 88% from viewers on Rotten Tomatoes.
Hopefully, the next season of Wonder Man will be a success, unlike its initial performance which was somewhat disappointing for Marvel and Disney.
