Marvel films have generally been very successful since the Marvel Cinematic Universe began. However, not every movie featuring Marvel characters has done well, whether part of the main MCU or not. One film, in particular, marked the end of a significant chapter for Spider-Man. Of course, the strong performances of Robert Downey Jr. as Iron Man and Chris Evans as Captain America were key to the success of some of Marvel’s best films.
While the actors did a great job bringing those characters to life, they still don’t reach the same level of fame as Sony’s Spider-Man films. Spider-Man, as Peter Parker, is the most popular Marvel hero, and the movies starring Tom Holland, Tobey Maguire, and Andrew Garfield have all been successful. However, not every Spider-Man project has worked out, and Sony has faced some challenges along the way.
Kraven The Hunter Officially Ended Sony’s Spider-Man Movie Franchise
Sony’s Spider-Man Universe has been a mixed bag for fans. While Tom Hardy’s Venom films were generally liked and successful in theaters, other attempts to expand the universe haven’t fared as well. Movies like Morbius, Madame Web, and Kraven the Hunter were widely criticized by both critics and audiences.
Those three films all failed to make a profit in theaters. Even the Venom movies earned less with each sequel – the first Venom film made $856.1 million worldwide, but Venom: The Last Dance only brought in $478.9 million. Most recently, Sony released Kraven the Hunter in theaters on December 13, 2024.
The superhero film starring Aaron Taylor-Johnson earned only $61.8 million at the box office, which is a disappointing result considering it cost $110 million to make. This means Kraven the Hunter lost the studio a significant amount of money; it needed to earn between $220 and $275 million just to cover its costs. Following the film’s poor performance, the studio announced no further plans for movies in the Spider-Man Universe (SSU).
The Spider-Man Universe franchise is now officially over. Sony Pictures executive Tom Rothman recently announced on the podcast The Town that they’re starting completely over with a “fresh reboot” and a new team. Without Spider-Man himself, the franchise struggled, and the disappointing performance of Kraven the Hunter proved that stories focusing only on Spider-Man villains and related characters weren’t enough to succeed.
Tom Holland’s Spider-Man Returns In The MCU This Summer
Although Sony’s spin-off Spider-Man movies have stalled, the core Spider-Man franchise starring Tom Holland is still thriving. Sony has found more success collaborating with Marvel Studios to create compelling stories for Spider-Man and related characters. The 2021 film Spider-Man: No Way Home came very close to earning $2 billion at the box office, and likely would have surpassed that mark if it had been released in China.
Tom Holland will reprise his role as Spider-Man in 2026 with a new film called Spider-Man: Brand New Day. The movie promises a fresh start for Peter Parker’s story within the Marvel Cinematic Universe, focusing on smaller, more personal adventures after the events of a large-scale multiversal conflict. It will bring Spider-Man back to his roots, emphasizing street-level action and familiar characters.
Continuing the gritty, down-to-earth feel, Spider-Man: Brand New Day will feature the hero’s first encounter with Jon Bernthal as the Punisher, and he’ll battle villains played by Michael Mando (Scorpion) and Marvin Jones III (Tombstone). The film also promises several surprises, including the part Mark Ruffalo’s Hulk will play and the identity of Sadie Sink’s character – with many speculating she’ll be playing Jean Grey from the X-Men.
With the release of Spider-Man: Brand New Day on July 31, Sony Pictures is expecting another blockbuster, potentially earning over $1 billion at the box office. There’s also a possibility Tom Holland will reprise his role as Spider-Man in two films in 2026. Although not officially confirmed, many believe Spider-Man will appear in the December release of Avengers: Doomsday due to the character’s popularity, and Peter Parker has a strong chance of making a surprise appearance.
The Future Of Sony’s Spider-Man Movie Franchise Explained
While Tom Holland likely won’t be part of Sony’s separate Spider-Man universe, the studio has listened to fan feedback. Previously, the lack of Spider-Man in those films hurt the franchise. Now, Sony is changing its approach to its Spider-Man movies, prioritizing what audiences want.
Following the conclusion of Miles Morales’ Spider-Verse trilogy with Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse in 2027, Sony Pictures is developing three new animated Spider-Man films. Two will be spin-offs centered around popular characters Spider-Gwen and Spider-Punk. The third will be an animated Venom movie, building on the success of the Venom franchise, with Tom Hardy participating in the project.
Sony hasn’t announced any new live-action Spider-Man movies beyond the existing Spider-Man Universe, but studio head Tom Rothman hints they’re considering them. Currently, Sony is planning to focus on a different Spider-Man character – similar to their animated projects – for their next standalone live-action film.
The new series will be a TV show starring Nicolas Cage as Ben Reilly, also known as Spider-Man Noir, in an upcoming Prime Video release. This Spider-Man series has a unique style and feel, setting it apart from other live-action Spider-Man projects.
As a huge Spider-Man fan, that’s exactly what I think the Spider-Man Universe needs right now. If Sony continues to move in this direction, I honestly believe their next set of Spider-Man movies will be even stronger than the run that finished with Kraven the Hunter.
