The franchise was a huge success for many years, almost guaranteed to make a lot of money at the box office. But lately, things haven’t been as reliable for this series of connected superhero films.
Marvel Studios had its lowest-grossing year at the box office in recent years, according to data from The Numbers. As of now, their worldwide earnings for 2025 total $1.32 billion.
In 2025, the studio’s total profit came from its films shown around the world. While Captain America: Brave New World earned a respectable $413.6 million, it underperformed expectations. Thunderbolts also saw a slight decrease in earnings with $382.4 million. The most successful film of the year for the studio was The Fantastic Four: First Steps, bringing in $520.5 million – though even that was a relatively modest amount.
Although $1.3 billion is a significant sum, it’s the lowest amount Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) films have earned globally so far. While the studio still surpassed $1 billion this year, their earnings were consistently much higher – more than double or even four times that amount – between 2017 and 2022, before starting to decline.
Looking at the bigger picture, Marvel’s projected earnings for 2025 are the lowest they’ve been since 2011, which was the last year the studio didn’t reach $1 billion in revenue. The combined earnings of Thor and Captain America: The First Avenger totaled $819.9 million. While this was more than the $621.2 million earned by Iron Man 2 the year before, it fell short of the $850.5 million combined earnings of Iron Man and The Incredible Hulk.
Man, 2012 was a HUGE year for Marvel. It was the first time they actually made over a billion dollars in profit for the whole year! And get this – they only released one movie that year! It’s crazy to think things could’ve gone the other way recently, between 2024 and 2025, and they almost didn’t do so well.
Deadpool & Wolverine Raked In More Than All 2025 MCU Releases
Marvel Studios has consistently earned over $1 billion worldwide at the box office since 2023. What’s particularly surprising is how they managed to stay above that mark in 2024.
In that year, the only Marvel Cinematic Universe film released in theaters was Shawn Levy’s ambitious crossover event. The movie marked the first appearance of both Ryan Reynolds as Deadpool and Hugh Jackman as Wolverine in the MCU, and it earned over $1.3 billion globally.
These figures offered a fresh wave of optimism for the franchise, which had been finding it difficult to recapture its former commercial and critical success. Even now, some fans think Deadpool & Wolverine might still surprise everyone, despite its already strong performance.
Honestly, I was shocked to find out this one movie actually earned more than all three of Marvel’s big releases from 2025 combined! And it wasn’t even close – it beat them by around $22 million. It’s a bit of a letdown as a Marvel fan, to be honest.
Okay, so as a massive Marvel fan, 2026 is looking INSANE! They’re finally bringing Tom Holland back as Spider-Man in Spider-Man: Brand New Day, which I’ve been waiting for forever. But the big one? Avengers: Doomsday in December! And get this – Robert Downey Jr. is playing Doctor Doom! Seriously, RDJ as Doom alongside all our favorite Avengers and the X-Men from the Fox movies? That’s a dream come true. I’m already predicting these movies will crush the box office, but we’ll see, right? You never really know!
Spider-Man: Brand New Day is set to swing into theaters on July 31, 2026.
