Marvel Studios has officially revealed the new costumes for the X-Men in the latest trailer for Avengers: Doomsday. This is a significant step in promoting the upcoming Avengers movie, and the trailer features the return of familiar faces like Ian McKellen as Magneto and Patrick Stewart as Professor X. Fans also get their first look at James Marsden as Cyclops, showcasing how the X-Men will be presented within the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
The latest trailer for Avengers: Doomsday gave fans a fresh look at the X-Men, starting with Professor X, played by Patrick Stewart, in his classic silver wheelchair. This version of the chair is different from the yellow, hovering chair seen in X-Men: The Animated Series and more recently depicted in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.

Patrick Stewart’s Professor X sported a relaxed and practical outfit, including a dark blue cargo jacket with a noticeable red and black ‘X’ emblem on the chest – a design reminiscent of earlier appearances.

Ian McKellen’s version of Magneto is shown sitting down, hinting at a peaceful relationship with Charles Xavier in this particular storyline – they don’t seem like enemies anymore. He looks tired and older, with long hair and simple clothes – a red t-shirt under a sweater – suggesting he’s a long way from his most powerful days.
The preview then moved to its biggest moment, finally showing a clear look at James Marsden as Cyclops – something fans haven’t seen much of since his quick appearance in X-Men: Days of Future Past.

This version of the costume looked a lot like the one from X-Men ’97. Marsden wore a blue suit with the classic yellow belt buckle and bright yellow stripes on the chest. The biggest difference was the lack of shorts, but otherwise, it was almost an exact copy of Cyclops’ current animated suit.

While Marsden wasn’t famous for playing comic book characters, and his portrayal of Scott Summers hasn’t held up well over time, his role in Doomsday could be a significant career boost.
When it came to costumes, James Marsden’s portrayal of Cyclops, like many X-Men characters in the early 2000s, moved away from the bright, colorful outfits seen in the comics and cartoon. Fans also didn’t care for the all-black leather suit he wore, finding it unappealing.

Even when the X-Men movies planned to show earlier stories, Tye Sheridan briefly wore a costume inspired by the classic cartoon, but it wasn’t visually distinct enough and we didn’t get to see him use it in any exciting scenes.

Fans of the X-Men are really enjoying the return of the classic 1990s animated series with X-Men ’97. Many appreciate that Scott Summers is portrayed as the team’s leader, sporting a striking blue and yellow costume. 2026 looks like a big year for the X-Men, with both the animated series continuing with a second season of ’97 and the live-action Doomsday movie bringing the mutants to the big screen.

We’re getting our first glimpse of the X-Men’s new costumes thanks to official Avengers Doomsday merchandise! The merchandise reveals the looks for characters like Beast, Mystique, Nightcrawler, and Gambit, who weren’t featured in the latest trailer.
Beast and Gambit appear in their most recent Marvel Cinematic Universe looks – seen in the post-credit scene of The Marvels and the Deadpool & Wolverine trailer – which differs from the classic X-Men uniform worn by the actor playing them.
Mystique’s look has changed dramatically since the original X-Men films. She now appears in a complete white suit, a departure from her previous on-screen style of often appearing without clothes.
There’s been some discussion about whether the X-Men team in Doomsday is the same one from ’97 in terms of official storyline, but it’s probably more accurate to say that Doomsday‘s team was simply inspired by the ’97 version.
Honestly, that quick shot of Cyclops really shook me – it looked so scary and destructive! I’m still trying to figure out if Doctor Doom had anything to do with it, though. It also felt a lot like we were seeing a flashback, especially with those Sentinels lurking in the background. I’m really curious to see how the X-Men will connect to the bigger Doomsday story. But the new trailer did give me hope – it looks like Marvel is really going to nail the look and feel of the characters, just like they did with Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine in Deadpool & Wolverine. That’s a great sign!
How the X-Men Fit into Avengers 5
By releasing a separate teaser for the X-Men’s appearance in Avengers: Doomsday, Marvel Studios signaled that their inclusion won’t just be a nod to fans of the past, but a significant part of the story.
The movie Doomsday seemed like it would finally give the X-Men the focused attention they deserved, something their earlier films often lacked. A brief scene featuring Cyclops hinted that he’d be shown as the strong leader fans always imagined, potentially making up for his disappointing arc in X-Men: The Last Stand.
The preview didn’t feature other mutants previously announced for the film, like Beast (played by Kelsey Grammer), Nightcrawler (Alan Cumming), and Mystique (Rebecca Romijn). These characters probably exist in the same universe that was briefly shown at the end of the movie The Marvels.
Meanwhile, Avengers: Doomsday also serves as a farewell to Fox’s X-Men characters, creating a connection to Marvel Studios’ plans for a new era of mutants.
