As a huge Marvel fan, I noticed something interesting: the latest movie on Disney+ actually has a slightly different title than what we saw in cinemas! It seems Marvel and Disney+ are trying something new with how they present these films on the streaming service, adding a subtitle to the title – it’s a first for the MCU, as far as I can tell.
When *Thunderbolts* became available on Disney+ on August 27th, the platform advertised it using the title *Thunderbolts – The New Avengers*, not just *Thunderbolts*. This is the first time a Marvel movie has been released on Disney+ with a title different from its original release.
After the premiere of the sixth film on May 2, 2025, Disney and Marvel started promoting it as the *New Avengers*. This came about because a character named Val gives the team that title within the movie. The marketing also aimed to clarify the meaning behind the asterisk used with the *Thunderbolts* title. However, this change in branding caught many people off guard and actually caused some negative reactions.
Disney+’s continued use of the title *Thunderbolts* – *The New Avengers*, including on home video releases, shows that this new name is now official. Although Marvel Studios initially used the title change as part of its marketing after the film came out, sticking with *The New Avengers* proves it wasn’t just a temporary tactic for the theatrical release of *Thunderbolts*.
However, *Thunderbolts* isn’t the only franchise film to have its title changed after it came out. Warner Bros. added Harley Quinn’s name to *Birds of Prey* in 2020, and Lucasfilm famously renamed the original *Star Wars* movie to *A New Hope* years later. Another example is Tom Cruise’s *Edge of Tomorrow*, which was marketed as *Live Die Repeat* on home video to better reflect its famous tagline.
Although *Thunderbolts* marks the first time Marvel Studios has ever changed a movie’s title after its theatrical run, they have adjusted the names of some Marvel Cinematic Universe projects before they hit theaters.
MCU Projects That Changed Titles Over the Years
The Avengers
Most people around the world know the 2012 Marvel movie as *The Avengers*, but in the UK, it was released as *Avengers Assemble*. This change was made to avoid confusion with a popular British TV show from the 1960s that had the same name, *The Avengers*.
Captain America: The First Avenger
Marvel Studios and Paramount removed “Captain America” from the title of the 2011 film *Captain America: The First Avenger* in Russia, Ukraine, and South Korea, according to The Hollywood Reporter. In those countries, the movie was released simply as *The First Avenger*.
Captain America: Civil War
The third Captain America movie was originally going to be called *Serpent Society*, but Marvel Studios later decided on *Captain America: Civil War*. While the *Serpent Society* title didn’t stick, some ideas from it appeared in the 2025 film *Captain America: Brave New World*. Originally, even more villains from the Serpent Society were planned, but they were ultimately removed from the movie.
Avengers: Endgame
When *Avengers: Infinity War* came out in 2018, the sequel didn’t have the title *Endgame* yet. Marvel Studios first announced both movies as *Avengers: Infinity War – Part 1* and *Part 2*. Later, they decided the 2019 film would have its own title, and kept it a secret from fans until December 2018, when *Endgame* was finally revealed.
Eternals
When Kevin Feige, President of Marvel Studios, initially revealed the movie and its large cast at the 2019 San Diego Comic-Con, it was called *The Eternals*. However, Marvel Studios later decided to release the film simply as *Eternals*, dropping the “The” from the title.
Agatha All Along
A notable example of a show’s title evolving is Disney+’s *Agatha All Along*. Originally developed and promoted as *Agatha: House of Harkness*, the *WandaVision* sequel went through another change to *Coven of Chaos*. It wasn’t until the final marketing stages that the series officially became known as *Agatha All Along*.
Captain America: Brave New World
I was really excited when Marvel announced the next Captain America movie with Sam Wilson, and it was originally going to be called *Captain America: New World Order*. But then they changed the title to *Brave New World* later in 2023. Apparently, they felt the original title brought up some tricky connections to things happening in the world today and in the past, so they decided a change was best.
Avengers: Doomsday
Recently, the upcoming movie *Avengers: Doomsday* underwent a title change, similar to other Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) projects. Originally, Marvel Studios had planned *Avengers: The Kang Dynasty* and *Avengers: Secret Wars* to finish Phase 6 of the MCU and wrap up the Multiverse Saga. However, after *Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania* received poor reviews and legal issues arose involving Jonathan Majors, who played Kang, Marvel decided to move away from storylines focused on that character.
In July 2024, Marvel Studios revealed that the Russo Brothers would be directing the next two Avengers films. The movie originally titled *Kang Dynasty* was changed to *Doomsday*, and Robert Downey Jr., famous for playing Iron Man, is returning to the Marvel Cinematic Universe – but this time as Doctor Doom, replacing Jonathan Majors’ Kang.
