Simu Liu, known for playing Shang-Chi in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, has been working on a movie based on the 2012 action game *Sleeping Dogs*. He recently shared that the project has reached a significant new step forward after several months of quiet development.
Liu announced on X (formerly Twitter) that a new draft of the script for Sleeping Dogs exists, though he jokingly hid the writer’s name. He accompanied the announcement with a picture of his own sleeping dog.

In a subsequent message, Liu praised Square Enix as “absolutely great,” but expressed concern that some of its studios don’t fully appreciate the value of this particular game property. He added optimistically, “But we will get them there.”
The video game *Sleeping Dogs* takes place in Hong Kong and centers on Wei Shen, a police officer who goes undercover to take down the Triad from within. Now, with a new attempt to adapt the story for film, Liu is expected to play Shen. Donnie Yen was previously cast in the role back in 2017, and a film was planned to shoot in 2022, but it never happened. Yen has since confirmed he’s no longer part of the project, as of earlier this year.
Shortly after announcing his participation, Liu expressed his desire to create more than just a film – he hoped for a follow-up video game for fans. Although a direct sequel never materialized, a spin-off game called Triad Wars was in development. Unfortunately, it was canceled during its beta testing phase, and the game’s developer, United Front Games, later closed down in 2016.
