Actor Simu Liu, known for his role in Marvel’s Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, has shared that he is working hard to bring back the Sleeping Dogs series, with plans for a movie and a sequel to the 2012 game. In social media posts, Liu expressed the challenging nature of convincing executives about Sleeping Dogs, noting that only a fraction of pitched film projects actually come to fruition.
He expressed that the immense affection for Sleeping Dogs shown on social media has given us new energy, referring to their efforts to create a Sleeping Dogs movie. Liu mentioned his intention is to produce a Sleeping Dogs movie initially, followed by a sequel game for fans, which has long been an aspiration of his.
According to a reliable source, IGN reports that a Sleeping Dogs film is currently undergoing early stages of production, with Liu potentially portraying the main character Wei Shen. However, just because a movie is in development doesn’t guarantee it will be produced; this stage indicates only that some preliminary work is being carried out.
Many video game adaptations into movies are announced, but rarely come to fruition due to various reasons. For instance, the film version of Sleeping Dogs has been in the works for close to a decade. At one time, Donnie Yen was trying to produce a Sleeping Dogs movie, but it seems he eventually abandoned the project.
Few film projects manage to progress from the pitch stage to getting the green light. It can be exhausting to pitch ideas to executives who don’t grasp the industry dynamics. However, the immense enthusiasm for Sleeping Dogs among us has truly revitalized us! Our goal has always been to create a movie followed by a sequel game, and this shared passion makes it all worthwhile.

In the initial Sleeping Dogs game, players assumed the role of Wei Shen, a police officer working undercover, who got involved in Hong Kong’s Triad criminal organizations. His mission was to spy on these gangs and collect proof for their illicit deeds.
Although Sleeping Dogs received positive reviews from critics and audiences alike, it failed to establish a franchise. A spin-off titled Triad Wars was halted during its testing phase, and the original developer, United Front Games, ceased operations in 2016. However, a Definitive Edition of Sleeping Dogs was published in 2014.
