As a long-time Overwatch 2 player and now a devoted Marvel Rivals fanatic, I can’t help but feel a sense of deja vu when it comes to the support players’ plight. Having been through the same ordeal in Overwatch 2, I empathize with my fellow Strategists who are being berated for not healing enough. It’s disheartening to see that even in a new game, the same issues persist, especially when you consider the lack of a role lock in Marvel Rivals.
2023 has seen Marvel Rivals emerge as one of the year’s top games, drawing a significant number of newcomers. Unfortunately, with this influx came an increase in unpleasant behavior, often directed towards support characters (Strategists). These players are being criticized for not healing adequately, sparking a response from Strategist players who are highlighting the complex difficulties they encounter during matches.
Marvel Rivals Support Players Fed Up With Being Blasted by Teammates Over Heals
For those who’ve experienced Overwatch 2 gameplay previously, particularly Support players, a similar predicament may resonate, especially when it comes to Marvel Rivals and its Strategist role (the Support/Healer class). In the heat of battle, these players have found themselves on the receiving end of chat messages during matches, urgently requesting more healing, occasionally with less-than-courteous language.
In Overwatch 2, a problem familiar to many players arises, and it’s amplified in Marvel Rivals due to the absence of a role lock system. With no role lock, teams may end up with only one healer, which can lead to tense situations when you are that healer. A recent discussion on the Marvel Rivals subreddit brought this issue to light.
As a gamer, I recently came across a Public Service Announcement posted by Reddit user u/Optimal-Chapter-9444, titled “Cut the whining about healing if you’ve only got one support on your team.” In this post, they shared their experience as the sole healer in a match, constantly being pestered by damage dealers for healing.
The post sparked hundreds of comments from other support players sharing similar frustrations. Some noted that, despite providing over 10,000 healing in a game, they were still blamed by DPS mains for not healing enough. One comment humorously pointed out, βItβs always the DPS instalock that runs into a 1v4 and blames the healers,β which is a scenario eerily similar to what Overwatch 2 players experience.
If the problematic player behavior seen in Overwatch 2 persists, it seems these issues may linger for some time. To make things better, Marvel Rivals might find success by implementing a role lock, offering rewards for playing support roles, or increasing the number of support characters – a point highlighted in our review due to the current roster being smaller than Duelists.
It seems like I strongly prefer an update that includes a team composition system, ideally with role queue or at least enforcing a minimum of two supports per team. Currently, it’s frustrating when there’s only one support and everyone is a damage dealer complaining about the lack of healing. I mean, come on, I can’t heal you all at once, chuckle!

It’s my hope that NetEase tackles this problem swiftly since it significantly increases the mental strain when playing the support role in Marvel Rivals. If they do, Strategists may experience slightly less stress during their upcoming games.
