As a seasoned gamer with over two decades under my belt, I can’t help but feel a sense of deja vu when it comes to Marvel Rivals and its metagame. It seems like every hero shooter I’ve ever played has that one character who becomes the go-to pick, the ultimate game-changer, the bane of every team’s existence – and in this case, that character is Hela.
Since their launch, some Marvel Rivals characters have consistently outperformed others, leading many gamers to express a desire for balance adjustments, particularly when it comes to a specific character who has been a topic of discussion since the beta.
The success of any hero-based game hinges on its selection of characters. Fortunately, Marvel Rivals debuted with an extensive array of well-known superheroes and villains, each possessing distinct skills tailored for various roles and gaming approaches.
Among the numerous options available, some stand out as more powerful than others, and a distinct pattern in gameplay, or “meta,” is beginning to emerge. Notably, Jeff the Shark, Iron First, and Venom have been popular picks from the start, each for unique reasons. These range from their incredible healing abilities, exceptional damage output, or resilient health pools.
As a gamer, let me tell you about another character who can change the entire game in an instant – that’s Hela, the Goddess of Death. She’s so powerful that she can take down Duelists with just two shots, and it happens so quickly that it feels like she’s erasing them before your very eyes. Some players even say she’s overpowered, calling her “busted.

Many responses echoed the same sentiment, as several individuals recounted instances where a Helas carried the whole team, so to speak.
One player commented, “Today I went up against a Hela who was essentially a solo force, her team managed just 5 to 7 kills while she racked up an impressive 30.” Another player remarked, “It’s been ages since I’ve witnessed a game with a character as overpowered as Hela. It feels like if someone picks her on my team, we have a strong advantage in the round.
As someone who participated in the Marvel Rivals beta, I can attest that if you’ve been following along, these concerns about Hela might sound familiar. During the testing phase, she was already an incredibly formidable character, boasting impressive damage output at a distance and a lethal ultimate move that could dish out over 1,000 health points.
Initially, Ultimate’s health reduction was more significant at launch, but Hela’s base health was boosted to 275. Combined with the 15% seasonal damage advantage she received during Season 0, her power level turned out to be considerably higher than in the beta version – a fact that left many players quite surprised.
One player remarked, “It doesn’t make any sense that she was boosted to 275hp. Spider-Man can’t handle her because she kills you while you’re trying to combine attacks with her,” expressing frustration. Another player exclaimed, “I wonder what the developers are smoking?
In January 2025, you can expect an update for Marvel Rivals Season 1, which might bring numerous adjustments to characters. Don’t be taken aback if you notice changes in characters such as Hela, Jeff the Land Shark, and Hawkeye, as they may receive some toning-down or balance adjustments.
