As a seasoned comic book enthusiast with decades of reading under my belt, I must say that the inclusion of the Moon Knight vs. Dracula meme in Marvel Rivals is nothing short of delightful! It’s not every day that fan-fueled humor makes its way into mainstream canon, and this little nod to one of comics’ silliest beefs is a breath of fresh air.
Over time, the captivating tale of Marc Specter, also known as Moon Knight, has struck a chord with many comic book enthusiasts. This is largely because of its exceptional narrative structure, which unfolds from an intriguing origin story and character evolution, consistently highlighted across different comic book series.
More recently, the PvP shooter Marvel Rivals by NetEase Games, featuring a superhero team, has added a Moon Knight codex for one of its Duelist characters. This addition has drawn interest from both players and comic book enthusiasts. On December 6th, 2024, Redditor invaderark12 pointed out an interesting detail: the game’s developer seems to have alluded to a fan-edited panel that was never canon in the comics, but may have been made canonical through Marvel Rivals.

“The Twilight of the New Crescent” narrates a conversation between Khonshu and Moon Knight, where the Egyptian Deity of the Moon scrutinizes Moon Knight about his encounters or understanding of vampires. In the closing pages of this manuscript, Moon Knight remarks that vampires are “draining,” followed by a hint that Dracula still owes him some cash, alluding to a popular fan-edited comic strip that trended a few years back.
The comic panel under discussion was initially taken from Solo Avengers #3, which came out in 1988. In the original version (credit to Beyond Anime & Comics), Moon Knight commented that he should try not to be affected by things because he’s more like a “creature of the night” similar to Werewolf By Night. Yet, he mentioned an unsettling feeling about the location he was investigating, the Castle of Shroud or Tower of Shadows, which made his senses feel uneasy.
In the fan-made modification, the dialogue between Moon Knight and Dracula was altered for a more direct approach, with Moon Knight calling Dracula a “smart aleck” instead of using profanity, and stating that he owes him money. This alteration became popular online in 2018 and could potentially be considered canon due to its presence within the game’s codex. It’s intriguing to note that NetEase Games incorporated a subtle wink to one of Marvel Comics’ least serious rivalries and non-standard interactions into the game, leading one to wonder if there might be additional non-canonical references or Easter Eggs hidden within Marvel Rivals.
