While Ironheart was presented as a possible successor in the Multiverse Saga, it’s evident that no one can truly take Stark’s place as the heart of the MCU.
With Robert Downey Jr. returning to the Marvel Cinematic Universe as the villain Doctor Doom in Avengers: Doomsday, and the Russo Brothers recently hinting at Iron Man’s return, fans have been eager to find a new hero to fill Tony Stark’s shoes. Now, Marvel has surprisingly revealed who that will be.
Marvel Entertainment marked the Disney+ debut of The Fantastic Four: First Steps by sharing a comparison image of Tony Stark and Reed Richards, playfully labeling them as “Two over-protective geniuses:”
According to a recent post, Marvel has hinted that Reed Richards will take over Tony Stark’s role in the alternate universe Earth-828. This makes logical sense considering both characters are brilliant and fiercely protective.
It’s notable that Reed Richards taking on a role similar to Tony Stark makes sense for Earth-828 within the larger Multiverse, especially since this world doesn’t have any other Avengers – the Fantastic Four are its sole heroic team.
Matt Shakman directs The Fantastic Four: First Steps, a movie about the Fantastic Four’s battle against the planet-eating Galactus. The film stars Pedro Pascal, Vanessa Kirby, Ebon Moss-Bachrach, and Joseph Quinn. It first hit theaters on July 25, 2025, and became available to stream on Disney+ on November 5, 2025.
What Reed Richards Being Tony Stark’s Replacement Truly Means
Tony Stark and Reed Richards both have their weaknesses, but they consistently try to make the best choices, whether in Marvel comics or the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Tony Stark wasn’t flawless – he made mistakes, like creating Ultron and supporting the Sokovia Accords. However, he ultimately saved everyone by using the Nano Gauntlet to defeat Thanos, a heroic act that cost him his life.
Although it’s probably too soon for Reed Richards to make a similar ultimate sacrifice as seen in Avengers: Doomsday, his position as Tony Stark’s successor implies he’ll be a key player in the fight against Doctor Doom. Beyond their existing conflicts, this battle is particularly meaningful because of Doctor Doom’s connection to Franklin Richards.
Reed Richards isn’t a flawless hero like Tony Stark; he often misses important details when focused on the larger problem. However, his first appearance showed he’s capable of handling serious threats and is determined to create a winning strategy. This ability will be essential if he hopes to match the brilliant mind of Doctor Doom in the upcoming conflict.
