Marvel Reveals the Steve Rogers Movie You Will (Probably) Never Get to Watch

Okay, so this is wild! Marvel just announced a new Captain America movie starring Chris Evans and Hayley Atwell, but here’s the catch – it’s exclusively for those who can somehow access other universes! After eight years of playing Cap, from fighting Nazis to battling Thanos, Chris Evans officially retired Steve Rogers and passed the shield to Sam Wilson. Apparently, he’s coming out of retirement for this one, teaming up with Peggy Carter in a project called Avengers: Doomsday. But before that happens, Marvel also teased their next Disney+ show, which is pretty cool too!

I just got a peek at a new clip from the upcoming Disney+ series Wonder Man, and it’s got me buzzing! We see Yaya Abdul-Mateen II as Simon Williams strolling through a Hollywood studio, and the background reveals a poster for a revamped version of Rogers: The Musical. For those who remember, this play first appeared in Hawkeye, and it looks like it’s gotten a pretty significant update a few years later. It’s a fun little Easter egg that suggests a connected universe and a lot of in-world history!

Following the appearance of the Rogers: The Musical poster in Hawkeye, it’s now confirmed the show is being adapted into a major motion picture. Like other popular stage productions such as Wicked, Les Misérables, and Phantom of the Opera, Hollywood is bringing Rogers to the big screen, potentially reaching a wider audience.

The Rogers poster features a total of 15 Marvel Cinematic Universe superheroes, revealing characters who weren’t seen in the Hawkeye series and essentially changing what we know about who was present.

As a huge Marvel fan, I was so excited to see that after Captain America’s departure, Disney+’s Hawkeye revealed people in our universe are honoring the original Avengers with a Broadway-style musical! It’s called Rogers: The Musical, and it basically tells the story of Steve Rogers all the way through Endgame. It’s a really fun way to keep his legacy alive!

Jeremy Renner, who plays Clint Barton, was at the premiere of his Disney+ series, making him the sole Avenger to attend the event, which was open to all team members. The show is a musical that retells stories from across the Marvel Cinematic Universe, changing some details to fit the plot. A standout performance is the song “Save the City,” which vividly portrays the Battle of New York.

Since its initial appearance, advertisements for Rogers: The Musical have popped up in several Marvel Cinematic Universe projects, including Spider-Man: No Way Home, Daredevil: Born Again, Ironheart, She-Hulk: Attorney at Law, and Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. This clearly establishes the show as a major Broadway hit within the Marvel Universe.

As a huge MCU fan, I was really excited when I heard about Rogers: The Musical, but it’s a bit of a bummer that it’s only existing within the Marvel universe. It means we won’t get to see this epic Steve Rogers story as a proper movie in theaters or on Disney+. Still, I’m a little envious of the lucky fans who actually got to experience it live at the Disney Parks – I hear it was amazing!

Following the popularity of a viral video, Disney Parks debuted a stage show version of Rogers: The Musical in the summer of 2023. The show included several new songs, like “U-S-Opening Night,” “I Want You,” “What You Missed,” “End of the Line,” and “Just One Dance.”

While Disney largely kept the character of Rogers consistent with his portrayal in Hawkeye, they had to make one significant alteration when bringing a real-life version to fruition in 2023.

As a huge fan of the Rogers: The Musical show I saw at Disney Parks, I was so excited when the complete soundtrack finally dropped on Spotify and other streaming services in September 2023! It’s been on repeat ever since.

I Need This Rogers: The Musical Scene to Happen in Avengers 5 & 6

The musical about Steve Rogers, Rogers: The Musical, has popped up several times in recent Marvel movies, reminding us that people on Earth-616 still remember the lost hero. With Chris Evans supposedly returning as Captain America in Avengers: Doomsday, it would be funny to see his reaction to seeing a poster or advertisement for the musical based on his life.

Depending on what happens to his character in Doomsday and Secret Wars – whether he lives, dies, or ends up somewhere else in the Multiverse – a scene of Steve Rogers, wearing his Captain America hat and watching his own musical, could be a really funny post-credits moment to wrap up Phase 6. He could quietly object to how things are portrayed, saying something like, “That’s not what happened.”

In 2023, a lucky few were able to see Rogers: The Musical live at Disney Parks. Now, though, fans can only listen to the soundtrack. This raises the question of whether Disney ever filmed a professional recording of the show for Disney+, similar to how Hamilton is available on the streaming service.

If you can’t wait to see the full version of Rogers: The Musical, high-quality 4K recordings are available on YouTube.
