Marvel Releases First Look At 3rd Live-Action Sandman (Photos)

Marvel is introducing a fresh version of Sandman, the famous Spider-Man enemy, making him the third to appear in live-action. While he recently returned in the 2021 film Spider-Man: No Way Home, this new Sandman will be quite different. This version of Flint Marko won’t be battling Tom Holland’s Spider-Man in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, signaling a new chapter for the character.

Jack Huston will star as Sandman in Amazon Prime Video’s Spider-Noir, joining Nicholas Cage as Ben Reilly / The Spider. This version of Sandman is a reimagining of the character as a 1930s-era enforcer—a tough guy for hire—instead of a villain with superpowers.

This is the third time Sandman has been adapted for live action, and this version is taking a notably different approach. Oren Uziel, who also created Spider-Noir, isn’t afraid to put a fresh spin on Spider-Man and his villains.

While it’s unlikely Flint will transform into a massive sandstorm like in the comics, early images of the character show he still retains his signature sandy appearance. Close-ups of the actor reveal a face textured with sand, hinting at the powers he might be concealing.

Sandman is expected to aid Silvermane (Brendan Gleeson), who serves as a key ally to the story’s primary villain and head of the New York City mafia.

Instead of big, action-packed fights like we’ve seen before, a film noir approach would probably focus on Sandman’s powers being used in more sneaky and unsettling ways. A poster from CCXP showed that Flint will likely be able to turn into sand, which will make him a hard-to-catch character throughout the series.

Sandman, a character first created by Stan Lee and Steve Ditko, debuted in Marvel Comics in the 1960s. He recently reappeared in live-action form in the movie Spider-Man: No Way Home, with Thomas Hayden Church reprising the role primarily through voice work and previously recorded footage.

Before reprising his role in the multiverse, Church appeared as Flint Marko, the Sandman, in Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man 3, where he was one of several villains battling Tobey Maguire’s Spider-Man.

For me, this version of Sandman is the definitive one. It’s the first time we ever saw him on screen, and the movie was huge, so it really stuck with people. Plus, the effects were amazing! I remember being totally blown away when he started growing to this massive size and almost took out Spider-Man – a seriously intense moment!

The least memorable, and most confusing, live-action appearance of Sandman happens in the movie Spider-Man: Far From Home.

In Far From Home, the Sandman character viewers saw wasn’t real. It was a complete illusion created by Quentin Beck, also known as Mysterio (Jake Gyllenhaal). He used holograms and drones to build a believable creature made of earth and sand, and claimed it was one of the “Elementals” – monsters from another dimension.

Although the Sandman wasn’t a real person, the robotic drones disguised as him could actually cause real damage, which made the whole situation incredibly risky.

You know, as a longtime Sandman reader, there’s a particular iteration of the character that almost everyone – myself included – seems to have completely blocked from memory. And honestly, it makes sense why; this version never really felt like a genuine part of the narrative.

Sandman is a Spider-Man villain that many fans have expressed interest in seeing more of. He’ll be back in Spider-Noir alongside returning characters like Robbie Robertson (played by Lamorne Morris), Cat Hardy (Li Jun Li), a different version of Black Cat, and Electro (Joe Massingill).

Next year is going to be amazing for Spider-Man fans! A new animated series connected to ‘Into the Spider-Verse’ comes out May 27th, and Tom Holland’s next solo Marvel movie arrives in July. With the upcoming ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ storyline, many are hoping to see the MCU version of Peter Parker battle Sandman.

Will Sandman Ever Join the MCU?

In the upcoming Spider-Man: Brand New Day, Tom Holland’s Spider-Man will battle a diverse group of villains, including Scorpion (played by Michael Mando), Tombstone (Marvin Jones III), Tarantula, and Boomerang. The movie also hints at a few surprise antagonists. There’s a strong possibility Spider-Man will confront the Savage Hulk (Mark Ruffalo) again, though their rivalry probably won’t last forever.

Considering the number of villains already appearing and the diverse cast, like Jon Bernthal as the Punisher, some fans are questioning if No Way Home eliminated certain enemies from Tom Holland’s Spider-Man’s future storylines.

There’s concern that villains like Green Goblin, Electro, Doc Ock, Lizard, and Sandman won’t get good versions in the main Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) because they’ve already appeared and been fought by Tom Holland’s Spider-Man in No Way Home.

We’re already seeing this shift in the upcoming film, Brand New Day, as none of the classic villains are expected to make an appearance. If Tom Holland continues as Spider-Man in future Marvel movies, it would be disappointing to leave out well-known characters like the Osborn family or Doctor Curt Connors.

It would be disappointing not to see Sandman again. After his recent appearance in Spider-Man 2 on PS5, the character offers a lot of potential for creative and exciting action sequences.

Let’s hope we still get to see all of Spider-Man’s classic villains in the main movies, and not just in separate, alternate-reality stories like Spider-Noir.
