Chris Hemsworth returns as Thor in Avengers: Doomsday, and Marvel is changing some key details from his previous appearance. A new trailer shown in theaters before Avatar: Fire and Ash gives fans a first look at Thor’s role in the movie.

The video has a calm and serious tone, mainly showing Thor praying to Odin for help in a forest before he sets out to find Love. The trailer gives a good look at Thor’s new outfit, which was anticipated as Marvel often updates costumes for merchandise. However, his overall appearance includes some changes to previously established details.

Thor’s Appearance In Avengers: Doomsday Is Totally Different Than In Love & Thunder

Thor’s outfit in Doomsday is nearly the same as what he wore in Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame. It features the same silvery base color and a slightly darker red cape. He also has the shaved head he first showed off in Thor: Ragnarok and Infinity War.

It’s not entirely unexpected to see changes in Thor’s appearance, but it’s noteworthy considering how much his look changed after Endgame. In Thor: Love and Thunder, Chris Hemsworth’s character looked quite different than he did in his earlier films. He previously sported long, golden blonde hair and a vibrant, new costume, reflecting the more humorous direction director Taika Waititi took with the character.

Instead of keeping one of Thor’s most popular looks, the movie seems to be ignoring his previous growth and changes. It’s going back to the outfit the directors, the Russo brothers, preferred. These changes to his appearance are noticeable, but the movie isn’t just altering Thor’s look – it’s also changing aspects of his character.

Thor Has Taken Stormbreaker Back In Avengers: Doomsday, Too

The trailer for Avengers: Doomsday also shows Thor with Stormbreaker, the powerful weapon he used throughout Avengers: Infinity War and his subsequent three movie appearances. However, the ending of Thor: Love and Thunder altered his situation and potentially his weapon of choice.

As a huge Marvel fan, I was so excited to see Thor back with a restored Mjolnir! It felt like a really important moment, signaling he was moving on from using Stormbreaker and reclaiming his classic hammer. But honestly, I was a little surprised to see things change again in Avengers: Doomsday. It just felt unexpected, considering how powerfully that scene established his shift back to Mjolnir.

It’s still unclear why Thor now prefers Stormbreaker over his old hammer, Mjolnir. It might have something to do with what happened with Jane Foster, or simply which weapon is more suitable for his current battles, including a confrontation with Doctor Doom. Regardless, instead of continuing Thor’s use of Mjolnir after Love and Thunder, the upcoming Avengers: Doomsday will rewrite history to explain why he gave up the powerful weapon.
