It’s been a long and troubled road for the planned Blade reboot in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. What started as a highly anticipated project has left fans feeling discouraged, especially after six years with no release date. While replacing Wesley Snipes as Blade was always going to be difficult, excitement grew when Mahershala Ali was cast in 2019. However, despite Blade recently appearing in the animated series *Marvel Zombies*, Mahershala Ali wasn’t involved, and his role was re-cast. Now, after the series finale, Marvel producer Brad Winderbaum has explained the reasons behind the delays and changes.
In a recent interview with *POC Culture*, Marvel’s Brad Winderbaum and Bryan Andrews discussed the *Marvel Zombies* series and clarified why Mahershala Ali didn’t voice the character of Blade, who appears as Blade Knight in the animated show. They explained that it wasn’t due to any issues with the upcoming *Blade* movie or the character’s future, but simply a matter of scheduling conflicts. Winderbaum stated it was “really a timing issue,” and Andrews added that they would have been thrilled to include Ali in the series.
When Mahershala Ali became unavailable, veteran voice actor Todd Williams took over the role of Blade Knight in *Marvel Zombies*. Williams is a familiar voice to many, especially fans of Prime Video’s *Invincible*. Interestingly, he also replaced Ali on that show! Ali originally voiced the character Titan in Season 1 of *Invincible*, but due to scheduling issues, Todd Williams stepped in to take over the role for Seasons 2, 3, and all future seasons.
Mahershala Ali Has Already Made His MCU Debut… Kind Of
Marvel fans are eagerly anticipating Mahershala Ali’s upcoming *Blade* movie. But did you know he’s actually already played Blade in the Marvel Cinematic Universe? It was a brief appearance, so you’d be forgiven for not noticing!
Mahershala Ali first appeared as Blade in a quick cameo in the 2021 movie *Eternals*. He only voiced the character in a scene after the credits finished, and didn’t actually appear on screen. Considering many Marvel fans would rather forget *Eternals* altogether, it’s understandable if you missed or overlooked this first look at his Blade.
The live-action *Blade* movie is still facing major development issues. Mahershala Ali is still set to star, and Mia Goth has a role that hasn’t been revealed yet. However, there haven’t been any encouraging updates about the film recently, leading some fans to think Marvel Studios may have cancelled it, particularly after Wesley Snipes reprised his role as Blade in *Deadpool & Wolverine*.
