The martial arts film that premiered in February, bringing back a popular action star, has now broken box office records. Directed by renowned action choreographer Yuen Woo Ping – known for his work on films like Kill Bill, The Matrix, Kung Fu Hustle, and Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon – Blades of the Guardians has received positive reviews and demonstrates a strong audience demand for well-made martial arts action movies.
Imagine a blend of the martial arts action of Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon with the high-octane energy of Mad Max: Fury Road, and you’ll get Blades of the Guardians. The story takes place in a desert landscape where various groups – swordsmen, the government, and western clans – are locked in a power struggle. We follow Dao Ma, a renowned bounty hunter, who accepts a job to escort a man to the city of Chang’an. He soon realizes his charge is a fugitive wanted by the entire empire, and a dangerous chase begins as every faction vies to capture him.
Inspired by the world of wuxia and George Miller’s Mad Max, and adapted from the comic by Xianzhe Xu, Blades of the Guardians is a non-stop action film set in a desolate desert landscape. The story follows a bounty hunter and his charge as they struggle for survival. Featuring a talented cast spanning generations of martial arts and action stars – including Wu Jing (Wolf Warrior), Nicholas Tse (Raging Fire), Yosh Yu (Creation of the Gods Trilogy), Tony Leung Ka Fai (The Shadow’s Edge), Max Zhang (Ip Man 3), and a welcome return for Jet Li (Hero), Blades of the Guardians has become the highest-grossing wuxia film ever made.
Trinity CineAsia has officially announced that Blades of the Guardians is now the highest-grossing wuxia film of all time, surpassing Yuen Woo Ping’s Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon. Although exact numbers haven’t been revealed, Blades of the Guardians has earned over $198.8 million, exceeding Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon’s worldwide total of $214 million.

It’s fantastic to see Blades of the Guardians doing so well, especially given the incredible buzz it’s generated. The action film currently boasts a remarkable 96% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, with audiences giving it the same score on the Popcornmeter. Critics are calling it a “martial arts masterpiece” and comparing it to a “live anime spectacle,” praising its beautifully choreographed fights and stunning visuals. This success is a major win for the wuxia genre. While Blades of the Guardians has now outperformed Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon at the box office, it’s important to remember that Ang Lee’s classic was made with a much smaller budget – just $17 million, compared to the $123 million spent on Blades of the Guardians. Achieving the same level of financial success relative to its cost will be a continuing goal.
