Marshals Episode 2 tackles major Yellowstone mystery head on

The show is already weaving plot points from the previous series, Yellowstone, into its story, even referencing a lingering mystery from that show’s ending. Be warned: spoilers follow…

The new Yellowstone spinoff, Marshals, centers on Kayce Dutton as he works as a U.S. Marshal, enforcing the law across Montana.

The new season began last week on CBS and Paramount+, with a shocking moment: Kayce’s wife, Monica Dutton, died offscreen. This loss is expected to deeply affect Kayce’s character.

A troubling event from Kayce’s past resurfaced in the latest episode, bringing up unanswered questions about a long-held Dutton family secret.

Marshals characters want to know what happened to Jamie Dutton

The years-long conflict between Beth and Jamie Dutton reached a shocking conclusion in the final episode of Yellowstone, when Beth fatally stabbed her brother, Jamie.

Jamie’s body was discovered near the train station, and Kayce found out he was gone, though he doesn’t yet know the specifics of how his brother died.

The central mystery of Marshals is Jamie’s disappearance, and Episode 2 directly focuses on several characters trying to find out where he is.

US Marshal Andrea asks Kayce if he has any information, and meanwhile, Harry, the team leader, questions Pete, a friend of Kayce’s from his time as a Navy SEAL, about the missing person.

Harry questions Kayce about a supposed location where the area’s worst criminals are sent, but Kayce denies knowing anything about it. It’s unclear how long he can keep avoiding answering those difficult questions, though.

Showrunner Spencer Hudnut told The Hollywood Reporter that the season ends with a major cliffhanger, essentially requiring a second season to resolve the storyline.

Hudnut also mentioned he’d be open to a storyline connecting his character with Beth Dutton in the new ‘Dutton Ranch’ series, if the opportunity arises. This suggests the ongoing mystery surrounding Jamie will likely continue for quite some time.

You can still catch “Marshals” on CBS Sundays, and find a list of the top new TV shows to watch this month here.
