With Severance Season 2 approaching, it’s increasingly intriguing to delve deeper into the motivations behind Mark S’s choice to separate his personal and professional lives.
Following a three-year gap after the exceptional debut of Severance in its first season, we’ll finally get Season 2 on January 17th. In the meantime, viewers are reconsidering some significant queries about the series, including the enigma surrounding Mark S himself.
At first, Mark’s character in the Apple TV+ series seems to be an ideal employee for Lumon, but as the enigmatic aspects of their workplace grow increasingly difficult to dismiss, he plays a crucial role in the uprising within the MDR department.
Additionally, it’s worth mentioning that Mark’s Outie is a stark contrast. He is secluded and suffering from depression, and his decision to go through with severance stems from the loss of his wife, Gemma. However, this action seems somewhat puzzling to fans, as it doesn’t immediately align with their understanding of the situation.
Mark’s severance doesn’t help him with his grief
Before the series unfolded, I believed that my wife, Gemma, had perished in a car crash in another realm. But now it seems that Gemma might actually be Casey, implying she’s still alive! This revelation has been a massive driving force behind Mark’s decision to disconnect, as he grapples with the crushing weight of his grief.
On Reddit, one fan has pointed out an inconsistency: Since Innie and Outie, belonging to Mark, cannot interact or process the same things, it seems implausible for Mark to employ severance as a means to handle grief. Ultimately, it wouldn’t significantly alter the situation.
Mark chose to go through the procedure as he yearned for some solace from his sorrow over his wife, however, it was pointed out that Mark never truly found relief. Although his outer self, or ‘outie’, may not be aware of Gemma’s existence, Mark’s inner self, or ‘innie’, does not forget her for a single moment upon transitioning to the innie state.
His frequent drinking could serve as proof for that claim. Yet, I’m curious, how exactly is this practice aiding him in dealing with his sorrow?”
Or more concisely:
“Using his drinking habit as evidence, how does the process help him cope with his grief?
It was noted by other users that Mark’s choice for severance wasn’t so much about coping with his loss, but more of a desperate measure to manage it. In essence, this decision provides him with financial support and allows him to sleep through eight hours daily, effectively shortening his days. In simpler terms, it can be seen as an attempt to evade the reality of his situation.

One person responded saying, “If you’ve ever felt utterly downhearted about a situation, it was like cutting down on sleep to hasten the arrival of the next day.
A different individual commented, “By cutting off, he provides some respite for both his mind and body from the daily burden of active mourning for eight hours. Moreover, his alcohol consumption seems to help him minimize his time spent living in essence.
A third commented, “The answer suggests no actions are taken to alleviate his grief.” I might counter by saying that, on the contrary, it appears his situation could be worsening since he’s not actively dealing with his problem or finding a true resolution. He spends half the day at work in a sort of unconscious state, and then does the same for the other half at home.
Severance Season 2 premieres on Friday, January 17 on Apple TV+.
