Tickets for the new movie Iron Lung, directed by popular YouTuber Markiplier, are selling incredibly fast – often within seconds. Experts believe the film is poised for a very successful opening weekend.
Iron Lung is a film based on the indie game of the same title. It was independently made by Mark Fischbach, known as Markiplier, who served as writer, director, producer, and editor. He first revealed plans for the project in 2023.
Back then, Fischbach – who also plays a role in the film as a prisoner tasked with a submarine mission following a disaster known as ‘The Quiet Rapture’ – insisted the movie would only be shown in theaters and wouldn’t consider any other options.
It’s happening! Due to overwhelming fan requests, the indie horror film Iron Lung will now be shown in major movie theaters worldwide. AMC, Cinemark, and Regal have all picked it up for release, and Cineworld in the UK will also be showing the film.
Iron Lung movie could score a $9-10 million opening weekend
According to a new report from Deadline, the film Iron Lung is expected to have a very successful opening weekend, potentially earning between $9 and $10 million when it’s released on January 30th.
According to Deadline’s box office editor, Anthony D’Alessandro, industry insiders think the film could actually earn twice as much as initially predicted.
Joe Garel, CEO of Western Film Services exhibition booking, also shared that tickets for showtimes were selling out almost immediately after they went on sale.
What’s especially remarkable is that Iron Lung was released and promoted by Markiplier himself. With over 38 million followers on YouTube, his trailers, updates, and fans sharing the game have been incredibly effective in getting the word out.
D’Alessandro also pointed out that Iron Lung will be up against Send Help later this month. Send Help is expected to earn $14 million during its opening weekend, a relatively close figure considering it’s directed by Sam Raimi and backed by Disney’s extensive marketing efforts.
Another film competing with Iron Lung is Shelter, an action movie with Jason Statham, and early estimates suggest it could earn between $8 and $10 million in its opening weekend.
As a huge Markiplier fan, I’m hearing that his game adaptation might actually surpass the initial success it had! It’s so exciting that it’s now playing in 2,500 theaters – I think that wider release is going to help it reach even more people and do really, really well.
Early ticket sales are reportedly exceeding $5 million, a remarkable figure that’s 30 times higher than what the horror film Terrifier 3 had earned in presales at this same point.

D’Alessandro advises against comparing upcoming releases to Terrifier 3’s initial ticket sales, explaining that strong early numbers for specialized or ‘niche’ films don’t usually translate to a wider audience.
Despite this, strong early ticket sales and a wider release in theaters are showing that Iron Lung is a success for independent film.
