Markiplier doesn’t want to be Hollywood’s “video game guy” despite Iron Lung’s $50M success

Markiplier, known for his popular YouTube channel, has given fans a preview of his upcoming films, but he’s hesitant about making more movies based on video games.

Markiplier’s first movie, ‘Iron Lung,’ earned $50 million worldwide after its release in January 2026. What started as a small US release quickly became a global success, leaving Markiplier incredibly moved and thankful.

Despite a small $4 million budget, Markiplier successfully created a film that earned back its costs and paved the way for another project. However, he doesn’t plan to focus on adapting video games into movies for the foreseeable future.

Markiplier hesitant to adapt too many horror games

On February 25th, Markiplier discussed his plans for his upcoming movie during an interview with the Lemonade Stand.

Surprisingly, Mark wasn’t eager to play a lot of video games. He explained that he prefers to create his own work and doesn’t want to be recognized for simply modifying the creations of others.

One of the hosts wondered if the speaker was now finding inspiration for games in everything around them, and if they were viewing the world specifically to find game ideas.

He agreed, but added he needs to be cautious. He explained that focusing solely on adapting games would limit him, labeling him as just the ‘games guy,’ and particularly if those games are horror, that’s all people would see him as.

Honestly, up until now, all my projects have been completely my own ideas. I think I could handle adapting someone else’s work – like a game – for my next project, and that would be okay. But if I don’t come up with something original after that, I worry it’ll hold me back creatively and make it harder for people to see me as a serious artist in the future. I really want to keep pushing myself with new ideas.

Markiplier explained that while it’s easy to create stories within an existing universe, he doesn’t find it creatively stimulating enough. He’s looking forward to developing his own original narratives and pushing his storytelling abilities with his own ideas.

Mark confessed he’s probably going to base his next movie on another video game, but he wouldn’t say which one. He stayed tight-lipped when asked directly about the title of his second film.

Mark has said he’d like to direct more films, but it could be several years before his next movie comes out.
