Mark Wahlberg is enjoying a resurgence in popularity for an older movie, and the timing couldn’t be better. As we approach the end of 2025, a film from earlier in his career is starting to gain attention again.
The new comedy-action movie, The Family Plan, launched on December 15, 2023, and is quickly becoming popular on Apple TV. It’s currently the #1 movie worldwide on the platform, and ranks as #5 in the U.S. The film was directed by Simon Cellan Jones.
Besides the US, The Family Plan is currently the most popular title in Sweden, Taiwan, Uganda, Argentina, Austria, the Bahamas, Brazil, and Colombia. It’s also number one in Germany, Greece, Hungary, Norway, Switzerland, and New Zealand. When it premiered in 2023, The Family Plan broke Apple TV’s all-time streaming records.
Featuring Ciarán Hinds, Michelle Monaghan, Saïd Taghmaoui, and Maggie Q, The Family Plan was written by David Coggeshall. It’s not surprising the movie is gaining popularity now, as the original film did well enough to earn a sequel, which is being released this week.
The sequel to The Family Plan, titled The Family Plan 2, will be available to stream on Apple TV starting November 21st. The original director, Jones, returns, and Coggeshall once again wrote the screenplay. As the release date nears, viewers are likely revisiting the first movie to prepare for the new installment.
Almost a year after The Family Plan came out in 2023, a sequel has been approved. The new movie will follow the family’s attempt to have a relaxing Christmas vacation in Europe. However, Apple TV+’s description of the Mark Wahlberg action film reveals that Dan, having left his life as an assassin, just wants to spend quality time with his children. When he discovers his daughter has other ideas, he plans a family trip to London, unknowingly putting them all in danger from a new threat.
Kit Harington and Reda Elazouar join the cast in The Family Plan 2. You can watch The Family Plan on Apple TV+, and The Family Plan 2 will be available on the streaming service starting Friday, November 21.
