Mark Wahlberg’s R-Rated “Action-Packed” & “Amazing” Thriller Continues to Succeed on Streaming

Mark Wahlberg has been a prominent figure in Hollywood for over 30 years and is known as one of the most dedicated actors working today. He’s already appeared in 12 films this decade, with four more scheduled for release. His commitment is clearly rewarding him, as a recent action movie continues to perform well on streaming services over a month after it first launched.

The Amazon MGM Studios film, Play Dirty, launched on Prime Video on October 1, 2025, and has been a hit ever since, consistently ranking among the top 10 most-watched movies. Currently, it’s the eighth most popular title on the platform, positioned between the horror film The Woman in the Yard and the James Bond movie No Time to Die. Written and directed by Shane Black and adapted from the Parker novels by Donald E. Westlake, Play Dirty stars Mark Wahlberg as a professional thief planning his most ambitious robbery yet. Here’s what the movie is about:

In the action thriller Play Dirty, a professional thief named Parker (Mark Wahlberg) plans his most ambitious heist yet. Along with his team – including Grofield (LaKeith Stanfield) and Zen (Rosa Salazar) – he discovers a score that brings them into conflict with the New York mafia in this smart and intense caper.

Like many classic heist movies, Play Dirty stands out because of the skillful direction and writing of Shane Black. He’s known for clever, exciting films – he wrote Lethal Weapon and The Last Boy Scout, and directed popular movies like Kiss Kiss Bang Bang and The Nice Guys. While some fans may still be disappointed by his 2018 film The Predator, that doesn’t detract from his strengths here.

‘Play Dirty’ Divided Fans and Critics

Prime Video

Despite everything, Play Dirty remains a surprisingly divisive movie – critics and audiences were almost equally split on whether they liked it. It currently has a 43% rating from critics on Rotten Tomatoes, and audiences aren’t much more enthusiastic, giving it a 42% score. Some viewers found the complex heist plot confusing, while others enjoyed the film’s humor, action-packed scenes, and surprising turns of events.

While Play Dirty isn’t a masterpiece, it’s a thoroughly enjoyable and undemanding movie – perfect for relaxing and switching off for a couple of hours. Mark Wahlberg and Lakeith Stanfield deliver strong performances, and it’s a nice treat to see familiar faces like Thomas Jane and Tony Shalhoub pop up.

Don’t expect an Oscar winner, but Play Dirty doesn’t try to be one. It’s a fun, straightforward action movie with witty dialogue, exciting action sequences, and plenty of thrills to entertain you. You can watch it now on Prime Video. And keep an eye out for Mark Wahlberg in the upcoming sequel, The Family Plan 2, coming to Apple TV+ on November 21, 2025.
