Mark Wahlberg has been very popular on streaming platforms recently, and a surprising movie is gaining a lot of attention over the Thanksgiving holiday. Despite receiving negative reviews – critics called it simplistic and over-the-top – his first film directed by Mel Gibson is finding an audience after a disappointing release in theaters. If you’re curious to see Wahlberg play a surprisingly humorous villain, now’s a great time to watch it during the long weekend.
Flight Risk has risen to the top of the streaming chart on HBO Max in the United States following its debut on the platform on November 26. Mark Wahlberg, Michelle Dockery, and Topher Grace star in the claustrophobic thriller, which mostly takes place on an airplane. Dockery plays an Air Marshal tasked with transporting a fugitive, potrayed by Grace, in an airplane piloted by a mysterious man with a hat (Wahlberg). Beneath that hat, however, is a severely balding head with a blood thirst, as it is immediately made clear that he is not who he claims to be. Read the official plot synopsis:
This thrilling movie stars Mark Wahlberg as a pilot flying an Air Marshal and a prisoner to court. As they travel through the Alaskan wilderness, the situation becomes increasingly tense and it becomes clear that someone on the plane is hiding something.
Critics weren’t impressed with Flight Risk. Though promoted as a fast-paced, 90-minute thriller, reviewers found the story unoriginal and lacking suspense. It currently has a 29% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, and even Mark Wahlberg’s over-the-top performance as the villain couldn’t save it from negative reviews. However, audiences seem to enjoy the film much more, giving it a 62% score on the Popcornmeter based on over 1,000 ratings. After a disappointing theatrical release earlier this year, Flight Risk has found success on streaming platforms, proving popular with viewers at home.
Was ‘Flight Risk’ a Box Office Flop?

Lionsgate
Let’s be real, Flight Risk wasn’t a blockbuster, but it didn’t completely crash and burn either. Costing $25 million to make, it actually hit number one for a quiet weekend in January, bringing in $11.6 million domestically. Ultimately, it made around $29.8 million here in the US and nearly $48.7 million worldwide. Considering the relatively small marketing spend – I’ve heard it was around $20 million – that’s not a terrible showing. However, I seriously doubt Lionsgate saw a profit in theaters. It likely needed a strong performance on digital and streaming to really turn things around.
Since its brief time in theaters, the thriller Flight Risk has been available on multiple streaming services and for digital rental or purchase. It’s consistently performed well on each platform, and now HBO Max is hosting it. Lionsgate might have been better off releasing the film directly to digital and streaming, like they do with many of their lower-budget action movies, but Flight Risk has still found an audience at home.
