If you’re planning to cast an actor as your onscreen dad, it makes sense to aim for a big name (particularly if the story takes place in your childhood home). At the Sundance Film Festival 2025, Lili Reinhart shared with Vulture that she had always hoped Mark Ruffalo would play her father in the upcoming dramedy Hal & Harper, where estranged adult siblings grapple with their childhood home being put up for sale. “He was the one we were told wouldn’t be possible, and then we got him,” Reinhart said of Ruffalo. Not being able to secure him initially didn’t deter Reinhart or director Cooper Raiff. “We thought, he’s our dad though,” Raiff, who also plays Reinhart’s brother and conceived the show seven years ago, explained. “When we first met, we felt like we all shared a past life connection.” Raiff, Ruffalo, and Reinhart are joined by co-stars Havana Rose Liu, Addison Timlin, Alyah Chanelle Scott, Chris Meyers, and Betty Gilpin.
We’ve returned to Sundance at The Vulture Spot, where we’re chatting with the stars and makers of this year’s most talked-about movies. Don’t forget to explore our other coverage from the film festival [here](link).
