During the 83rd Golden Globes, Judd Apatow and Mark Ruffalo publicly criticized Donald Trump. While most winners kept their acceptance speeches apolitical, Apatow used his time presenting the Best Director award to make a point. He jokingly referenced ending his previous ‘quiet’ boycott of the Golden Globes – sparked by The Martian‘s win in 2015 – and, according to Variety, used the opportunity to criticize the Trump administration.
That’s all in the past, and a lot has changed since then. It was a decade ago, and we’ve since dealt with the COVID pandemic. Honestly, things feel pretty restrictive right now. Despite everything, I’m still really concentrating on my ‘The Martian’ project.
Mark Ruffalo made a strong statement at the red carpet event. He wore a “Be Good” pin to remember Renee Good, who was killed by an ICE agent in Minneapolis on January 7, 2026. In an interview with USA Today, Ruffalo stated that Good was murdered and criticized Vice President J.D. Vance for trying to minimize the tragedy, accusing him of lying about the situation. Ruffalo also spoke out against Donald Trump and the current state of the world.
The situation with Venezuela, which involved an unlawful invasion, is deeply concerning. It’s alarming that the current leader seems to disregard international law, prioritizing personal beliefs above all else. Considering his history – including convictions and serious accusations – it’s frightening to think his judgment could guide the most powerful nation in the world. This message is for Renee, and for all Americans who are feeling afraid and threatened right now. I share those feelings, and I believe what’s happening is a betrayal of American values.
Celebrities Speaking Out Against Donald Trump

Following significant public criticism of recent actions by Donald Trump and his administration, Mark Ruffalo and Judd Apatow have voiced their concerns. Just weeks into the new year, the Trump administration launched military actions in Venezuela, capturing Nicolás Maduro and claiming the U.S. would take control of the country. In a subsequent interview with The New York Times, Trump stated he doesn’t believe he’s bound by international law, and that his only restraint from expanding control elsewhere is his “own morality” and personal judgment, adding, “It’s the only thing that can stop me.”
As a lifelong moviegoer, I’ve always believed stories should be told with honesty and empathy. That’s why I’m deeply disturbed by the shooting of Renee Good by ICE agents, and even more so by the reaction it’s getting. It’s appalling to hear people like Vice President Vance call it a “tragedy of her own making” and then praise the agent who shot her – an unarmed civilian, no less! What’s really troubling is seeing CBS News, now under new leadership, seemingly just repeat what the administration is saying without questioning it. It feels like a crucial story is being twisted, and the public isn’t getting the full picture. It’s disheartening to see a news organization behave this way, especially when a life is involved.

In a bit of irony, the Golden Globes aired on CBS and Paramount+, and host Niki Glaser made a pointed joke about the network’s new leadership, David Ellison and Bari Weiss. She quipped that CBS News deserved an award for “most editing,” implying they were selectively presenting information. This was a reference to reports that Weiss had stopped a 60 Minutes report investigating alleged mistreatment at a detention center in El Salvador where the U.S. sends deportees. Mark Ruffalo was then asked why it’s important for celebrities to share political views at events like the Golden Globes, and he responded:
I’m happy to be here celebrating this Golden Globe nomination, but I also need to acknowledge that things aren’t right. It’s difficult to ignore what’s happening, and honestly, I’m not feeling well, so I can’t really pretend everything is okay.
