I’ll admit, I was pretty surprised during those long hours Marvel Studios spent showing us just chairs to tease the cast of Avengers: Doomsday,. Seeing some of the names pop up was a real shock, especially the news that many of the original X-Men actors would be involved. But honestly, I was even more struck by who wasn’t there. I was really disappointed to see that Mark Ruffalo, the Incredible Hulk, wasn’t among them.
Few of the original Avengers are left in the MCU, but Ruffalo’s Hulk is one, so not having him in the next Avengers movie is kind of a big deal. In a recent appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, the host asked Ruffalo about the fact that he’s apparently not in the movie, and the actor joked that it was because of his tendency to accidentally reveal spoilers. The actor said…
They decided it was better to get rid of me than for me to tell the end of the next movie.
Although Tom Holland frequently receives criticism for revealing Marvel secrets, Mark Ruffalo is actually equally prone to spoilers. He famously once accidentally revealed the major plot twist at the end of Avengers: Infinity War well before the film’s release.
Mark Ruffalo’s Hulk last appeared in the MCU during the She-Hulk: Attorney at Law series. He unexpectedly revealed he had a son, and since we don’t know anything about him yet, many fans would be excited to see Ruffalo reprise his role, just to clarify what’s happening with this new development.
Although Mark Ruffalo wasn’t mentioned in the initial cast list, it’s still likely he’ll be in Avengers: Doomsday. Kevin Feige, head of Marvel Studios, has stated the announced cast wasn’t complete, meaning we can anticipate a few unexpected appearances.
Of course, if Mark Ruffalo is in the movie but his appearance hasn’t been officially announced, that’s precisely the kind of spoiler Marvel Studios would want to keep under wraps. It’s quite possible the actor’s comment is even more accurate than we think. By keeping Ruffalo’s involvement a secret, they avoid him being questioned about the film, which greatly lowers the chance of him accidentally letting something slip. The goal is to reduce the odds of a spoiler being revealed. This strategy helps maintain the element of surprise.
There’s also a chance Mark Ruffalo’s Hulk won’t be in Doomsday, but will show up a year later in Avengers: Secret Wars. Although these two films aren’t predicted to be directly connected like Infinity War and Endgame were, they’ll probably still have some connection. Therefore, if Hulk is featured in either movie, he’ll remain a part of the overall narrative.
Another original Avenger returning for Avengers: Doomsday is Chris Hemsworth as Thor, and people are already discussing what might happen to him. Many fans are concerned he might not make it through the movie, which could make the situation with Hulk even more critical.
